JCCC lands 14 players on the ALL-KJCCC East Division baseball team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced its postseason baseball awards for the 2023 season for the East and West Divisions and Johnson County Community College had 14 players named to the All-KJCCC East Division team. It is the second time in team history that JCCC has produced 14 all-conference performers in one season.

Earning first team honors were first baseman Ryan Callahan, designated hitter Dagen Brewer, starting pitchers Luc Fladda and Gabe Nutter and relief pitcher John Chambers. Second team honors went to third baseman Jeremy Rader, shortstop Dylan Hufft, outfielder Cooper Combs and relief pitcher Maddox Burkitt and second baseman Easton Elliot, outfielder Rhett Hendricks, catcher Shea McGahan and starting pitchers Ty Blecha and Cole Koonce were selected as honorable mention performers. 

Additionally, Fladda was named Pitcher of the Year, Brewer was co-Freshman of the Year and Eric Honor was selected the East Division Coach of the year after leading his squad to a school record 55-8 mark, conference and district titles and the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA World Series.

Callahan, who also was named All-Region 6 first-team, is batting a team-best .433 (77-for-178) with 16 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 65 runs scored and 54 RBI. He leads the team in RBI, runs, walks with 32 and hit by a pitch with 17. He ranks second in hits and doubles and third in triples. Callahan ranks fourth in the conference in batting and is tied for 21st in the NJCAA. He has produced 23 multiple-hit and 15 multiple-RBI games, both second on the team. 

Brewer, who also was named All-Region 6 second-team, is batting .406 (58-for-143) with 12 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, 39 runs scored and 56 RBI, which leads the team.  He has also drawn 21 base-on-balls. Brewer has produced 20 multiple-hit and a team-best 16 multiple-RBI games, highlighted by a two home run, five RBI effort in an 11-9 win at Neosho County April 13.

Fladda, who also was named All-Region 6 first-team, has appeared in 17 games, 16 as a starter. He has a perfect record of 12-0 with 104 strikeouts in 96.0 innings, six complete games and an earned run average of 2.63. Fladda leads the conference in ERA and inning pitched and ranks second in the in victories, strikeouts, and complete games. Nationally ranks second in innings pitched, tied for third in victories and tied for 13th in strikeouts. Twice during the regular season, Fladda was selected the KJCCC East Pitcher of the Week twice, earing the honor in weeks 2 and 8. 

Nutter has appeared in 15 games, 14 as a starter. He has a perfect record of 8-0 with 95 strikeouts in 68.0 innings pitched with an earned run average of 3.04. Nutter also has one save. He is holding batters to a batting average .204. Nutter has topped 10+ strikeouts on three occasions. His 95 strikeouts are second most on the team and rank fourth in the conference. Nutter was selected the KJCCC East Pitcher of the Week twice, earing the honor in weeks 3 and 12. 

Chambers leads the Cavaliers pitching staff with 20 appearances this season, all in relief. He stands 4-0 with seven saves which has him tied for the lead in the conference. He struck out 38 batters in 37.1 innings of work with an earned run average of 1.45. He is holding opposing hitters to a .122 batting average.

Rader, who also was awarded a Region 6 Gold Glove at third base, is batting .392 (65-for-166) with 10 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 52 runs scored and 48 RBI. He has also drawn 27 walks. Rader ranks third on the team in homers, and has produced 17 multiple-hit and 12 multiple-RBI games, which ranks tied for third on the team. In the 12th week this season, Rader was chosen the KJCCC East Player of tht Week. 

Hufft is batting .369 (79-for-214) with 13 doubles, eight triples, 48 runs scored and 46 RBI. He leads both the team and conference with eight triples, and it tied for eighth in the NJCAA. That total also ranks tied for the sixth-best season in team history. Hufft leads the team and ranks tied for ninth in the conference in hits …He also leads the team with 24 multiple-hit games and tied for third with 12 multiple-RBI games. In the sixth week this season, Hufft was selected the KJCCC East Payer of the Week.

Combs is batting .371 (66-for-178) with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 53 runs scored and 48 RBI. He also has drawn 28 base-on-balls and has been hit by a pitch nine times.  His 53 runs are rank third on the team and his nine homers are second-most. Combs produced 19 multiple-hit and 12 multiple-RBI games. In the fourth week this season, Combs was named the KJCCC East Player of the Week.

Burkitt has appeared in 16 games all in relief. He is 1-0 with four saves.  He struck out 39 batters in 24.1 innings pitched with an earned run average of 3.33.  His four saves tie for seventh in the conference. In week 14 this season, Burkitt was named the KJCCC East Pitcher of the Week. 

Elliot is batting .327 (50-for-153) with four doubles, five triples, wo home runs, 36 runs scored and 37 RBI He ranks second on the team and tied for fifth in the conference in triples. He also ranks second on the team with 16 stolen bases and eight sacrifices. Elliot has produced eight multiple-hit and seven multiple-RBI games. 

Hendricks is batting .345 (50-for-145) with seven doubles, three triples, five home runs, 45 runs scored and 29 RBI.  He also has walked 25 times. He has produced 14 multiple-hit andnine multiple-RBI games. Hendricks has been solid with glove, committing just one error in 86 fielding chances.

McGahan .430 (49-for-114) with seven doubles, two triples, five home runs, 30 runs scored and 38 RBI. He ranks second on the team in batting average. He has produced 16 multiple-hit and 11 multiple RBI games, highlighted by a 4-for-4, five RBI effort in a 10-2 win at Labette May 3. 

Blecha has appeared in 15 games, 12 as starter with two complete games and one shutout. He stands 9-3 with one save, 54 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched with an earned run average of 2.67. He is holding opposing hitters to a .216 average. Blecha's 2.67 ERA ranks second in the conference and 35th in the NJCAA. He also tied for sixth in the conference and 29th in the NJCAA in season wins. 

Koonce has appeared in and started 16 games. He has a record of 13-1 with 86 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched with an earned run average of 4.78. Koonce leads the conference and is tied for first in the NJCAA with 13 victories. He ranks eighth in the conference in strikeouts. Koonce three games with 10+ strikeouts, and had a streak of seven straight wins followed by a six-game streak. Koonce was selected the KJCC East Pitcher of the Week three times during the season, earning the honor in weeks six, 10 and 11.
