JCCC baseball splits season opening series at Amarillo College

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The eight-ranked Johnson County baseball team split its season opening four-game series at Amarillo College last weekend. 

The Cavaliers opened the series with a 4-3 victory in eight innings, then lost games two and three to the Badgers in walk off fashion, and evened the series is a five inning run rule 13-1 victory in the final game.

In the opener, sophomore designated hitter Dagen Brewer drove in two runs with a double and home run and scored twice and freshman first baseman Easton Roe collected an RBI single. 

In game two, catcher Kyle Hepburn belted a solo home run, and left fielder Jake McClure, first baseman Carter Kelley, shortstop Maddux Fleck also drove in runs. 

However, the big hit came from the Badgers Chris Benavidez in the bottom of the eighth. His single through the left side of the infield gave Amarillo a 7-6 win. 

In the third game, the Cavaliers led 1-0 after the top of the seventh inning, but Amarillo plated four runs, three off a home run from David De Hoyos to earn the Badgers second straight walk off victory.

The final game was all Jonson County. The Cavalier scored 13 runs off 13 hits and starter pitcher Brandon Stone held Amarillo two just one run off two hits with four strikeouts. 

Brewer and second baseman Jack Mosh each drove in two runs.  Driving in single runs were McClure, right fielder Miken Miller, Roe, Kelley, Fleck and third baseman Jordan Black.

Johnson County play play at home for the first time in 2024 when they host Crowder in a doubleheader on Thursday, February 8 at 1 p.m.
