JCCC takes first two games to extend series win streak 38 straight over Highland

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 9-ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team (27-7, 9-1) took the first two games of the four-game season series with Highland Community College (11-23, 0-14), winning 16-5 and 6-2 at the JCCC Baseball Complex on Thursday afternoon. JCCC also extended their win streak in the series with the Scotties to 38-straight victories. The last Highland prevailed was on April 20, 2013, with a 7-6 win. JCCC leads the all-time series 116-32.

In the opener, sophomore second baseman Jack Mosh drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Cavaliers to the win. He hit a home run to right field in the first scoring two and later in the inning singled home a run in a 10-run inning for the Cavaliers. Mosh had an RBI single in the third.

In the Cavaliers 10-run first, sophomore first baseman/DH Dagen Brewer and freshman left fielder Jake McClure each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore catcher Cal Kilgore and freshman center fielder Ryker Edwards each drove in two runs with a single, and freshman shortstop Maddux Fleck drew a bases loaded walk to earn an RBI.

Johnson County added six more runs in the bottom of the third inning off six hits. Mosh collected his fourth RBI of the game with a single. Brewer doubled, scoring a run. Freshman right fielder Miken Miller belted a two-run homer to right field and sophomore third baseman Jordan Black ripped a two-run double to close out the scoring. 

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Borberg earned the victory and upped his record to a perfect 5-0. He gave up five runs, three earned, off six hits while striking out six over five innings of work.

In the second game, Highland took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but JCCC answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning then took the lead for good with two more in the bottom of the second. The Cavaliers platted three more in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away. 

Kilgore singled and doubled and scored a run and Mosh ripped a two-run single to power the Cavaliers offense. Black and Edwards also picked up RBIs. 

On the bump, freshman right-hander Brandon Stone hurled seven strong innings. He allowed two earned runs off six hits, walked two and struck out eight.

Sophomore right-hander Austin Berggren closed out the game with two perfect innings, striking out two of the six batters he faced.

The series heads to Highland, Kansas on Saturday for the final two games. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.  The Cavaliers will take on Coffeyville Community College in a four-game conference series next week beginning on Thursday, April 4 in Coffeyville.
