JCCC baseball moves to No. 7 in NJCAA D-I baseball poll

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Across three national polls, the Johnson County baseball team hold a spot in the top-10 and moved up two spots to No. 7 in this week's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Poll. The Cavaliers also hold the No. 7 spot in the Dream Big Athletics Poll and are the No. 9 ranked team in the Perfect Game Poll.

The Cavaliers pitching has been solid through the first 36 games of the season. They lead the conference in strikeouts (359), strikeouts/9 (12.09), shutouts (6) and WHIP (1.22). On the national level, JCCC leads in K/9, ranked third in strikeouts, fifth in the WHIP and seventh in shutouts.

Freshman right-hand pitcher Brandon Stone leads the conference in strikeouts with 55, followed by sophomore right-hander Ryan Borberg with 53.  Freshman righty Josiah Golden ranks sixth with 50 strikeouts. Stone and Borberg rank fourth and sixth respectively in WHIP at .99 and 1.10. Both pitchers are also perfect to date. Stone stands 7-0 and ranks second in win. Borberg is 5-0 overall and his five victories tie for seventh. 

At the plate, the Cavaliers area also rank among the top teams in the conference in several categories. They lead the KJCCC in hits (363), rankd second in the average (.349), runs (336), stolen bases (96) and walks (182). They are third in doubles (70) and RBI (278).

One of the top players for JCCC this season is sophomore infielder/DH Dagen Brewer. He leads the conference in hits (51), extra base hits (28) and RBI (56), ranks second in average (.472) and home runs (13) and third in doubles (14). Nationally he is tied for fifth in RBI, eighth in batting average and ninth in home runs. 

In addition to Brewer, head coach Eric Horner has seven other starters hitting over .300. Sophomore catcher Cal Kilgore leads that group at .451 and is coming off a huge series against Highland. 

Sophomore infielder Jack Mosh is hitting .398 and is second on the team in hits (45) and RBI (30).

Rounding out the rest of the starters are freshman catcher Miken Miller (.393), freshman infielder Maddux Fleck (.377), freshman outfielder Ryker Edwards (.339), freshman infielder/outfielder Jake McClure (.325) and sophomore catcher Kyle Hepburn (.323). 

Johnson County (29-7, 11-1) will face Coffeyville this week in another conference tilt. The first twin-bill will be in Coffeyville on Thursday, April 4, and will conclude the series on Saturday, April 6 at JCCC. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
