Cavaliers take first two games of series with Labette

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 3-ranked Johnson County baseball team Improved to 38-8 on the season and 20-2 in conference play taking the first two games in the four-game series with Labette by the scores of 11-1 and 11-2. 

In the opener, Dagen Brewer drove in four runs on two hits and a walk. In the top of the first inning he got the Cavaliers on the board with a two-run home run over the right field wall, his 14th on the season and 24 of his career.  In the second he drew a bases loaded walk to score a run and drove in a run in the fifth on a ground out, giving him league leading 64 driven on the season.

Third baseman Jordan Black also went yard with a solo shot in the second, shortstop Maddux Fleck picked up three RBI off two hits and left fielder Jake McClure, DH Miken Miller and catcher Kyle Hepburn each drove in a run.

The Cavaliers amassed 14 hits in the game with Brewer, Black, Fleck, Hepburn and center fielder Jesse Tisdell each collecting two hits.

Ryan Borberg pitched five solid innings to up his season mark to 7-1. The right-hander allowed just one run off one hit while striking out seven over his five innings on the hill.  Landon Fulk pitched one inning of shutout ball in relief.

In the second game right fielder Ryker Edwards had the hot bat, driving in four runs on three hits. He doubled in the third inning, scoring two runs, and hit a two-run homer to center field in the sixth.

Second baseman Jack Mosh drove in runs with a single and a triple and McClure, Fleck, Brewer and Easton Roe each collected one RBI. 

Right-hander Brandon Stone allowed two unearned runs off four hits over six innings, while striking out 11 batters to match his season high. Stone is now 10-0 on the season with 78 strikeouts over 65 innings worked.

Right-hander Austin Berggren pitched one inning of shutout ball in relief. He gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

The Cavaliers and Cardinals will convene again on Saturday, April 20 at the JCCC Baseball Complex to complete the series. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m.
