JCCC lands 13 players on the All-KJCCC East Division team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced its postseason baseball awards for the 2024 season for the East and West Divisions and Johnson County Community College had 13 players named to the All-KJCCC East Division team. JCCC had six named as first-team performers, two as second-team and five were selected to the honorable mention team. 

Earning first-team honors were first baseman Dagen Brewer, starting pitcher Brandon Stone, second baseman Jack Mosh, third baseman Jordan Black, outfielder Ryker Edwards, and catcher Cal Kilgore.  Outfielder Jake McClure and starting pitcher Ryan Borberg were second-team selections and shortstop Maddux Fleck, outfielder Miken Miller, starting pitcher Josiah Golden and relief pitchers Maddox Burkitt and John Chambers were selected as honorable mention performers. 

Additionally, Brewer was named the Most Valuable Player, Stone was named Pitcher of the Year and Eric Horner was selected as the East Division Coach of the Year for the second straight year. This season he is leading his program to one of the best in team history. Horner has guided the Cavaliers to back-to-back East Division and Region 6/Plains District championships and a second consecutive berth to the NJCAA World Series. The No. 1 ranked team in the final NJCAA Poll, a first in program history, the Cavaliers stand 52-11 entering World Series. Through four seasons as JCCC's head coach, Horner has tallied 197 wins, the most of any previous KJCCC coach over that span.

Brewer is having a tremendous campaign for Johnson County, batting a team-best .424 (75-for-177) with 21 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs, 40 extra base hits, 64 runs scored and 86 runs driven in while leading the Cavaliers to KJCCC East Division and Region 6/Plains District titles, a No. 1 final NJCAA ranking and a spot in the NJCAA World Series. He led the conference in both extra base hits and RBI, ranks second in doubles, fourth in home and fifth in batting average. Brewer has produced 22 multiple-hit games highlighted by a five-hit, four-home run, 9-RBI performance in a win at Fort Scott. He was honored as the East Player of the Week three times, earning the award in weeks six, seven and 14. Last season Brewer was selected as co-Freshman of the Year. Brewer has committed to Pittsburg State University. 

Stone is not only is having one of the best pitching seasons by a freshman in Johnson County history, but his numbers also rank among the best in team history. The conference leader in strikeouts this season, Stone has mowed down a new program record 110 batters in 99.1 innings pitched. He stands 13-1 with an ERA of 3.17. He also leads the conference in victories and innings pitched and ranks fourth in ERA. Nationally, he ranks tied for first in wins and tied for sixth in strikeouts. Stone was honored as the East Pitcher of the Week in week 11. Stone has committed to the University of South Carolina. 

Mosh is having an outstanding sophomore season after spending the 2023 season at the University of Missouri. He is batting .389 (77-for-198) with 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 62 runs scored and 50 runs driven in. He also has drawn 41 free passes, second on the team and tied for 10th in the conference. He also produced 21 multiple-hit games, third most on the team, and 12 multiple-RBI which tie for fifth. Mosh also flashed a solid glove in field making just four errors in 183 chances, good for a .977 fielding percentage. 

Black made a big leap in his production from his freshman season. This year he is hitting at a .344 clip (65-for-189) with 11 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 65 runs scored and 55 RBI. He has produced 18 multiple-hit and 12 multiple-RBI games highlighted by a four-hit six-RBI effort in a 26-8 win over Coffeyville. Five day later against Allen, Black hit two doubles, a home run, scored four times and drove in five runs. He was selected as the KJCCC East Player of the Week in week 10. Black has committed to Wichita State University. 

Edwards is batting .357 on the season (56-for157) with 10 doubles, a team-leading six triples, nine homers, 48 runs and 52 RBI. He is also tied for the team lead with 24 stolen bases, only getting caught one time. His six triples also tie for the most in the conference, and rank tied for 12th in the NJCAA. Edwards also has produced 15 multiple-hit games and 14 multiple-RBI games, highlighted by five RBI game which included two home runs in a win over Fort Scott. Edwards was selected as the KJCCC East Player of the Week in week 13. 

Kilgore proved to be a key addition to the roster this year after spending stints at New Mexico State and Arkansas the past two seasons. Kilgore is batting .375 (51-for-136) with 17 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 37 runs scored and 46 driven in. His 17 doubles rank second on the team and tied for eighth in the conference. He also has tallied 15 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI games highlighted by a pair of five-RBI efforts in wins at Highland and against Pratt in the opening round of the district tournament. Kilgore's glove behind the plate has been just as valuable as his bat. He has a fielding percentage of .988, committing just four errors in 333 fielding chances. Kilgore was twice selected as the KJCCC East Player of the Week, earning the honor in weeks nine and 11. He has committed to the University of Utah. 

McClure has proven this year to be a very productive leadoff hitter for the Cavaliers. He is batting .342 (75-for-219) with 12 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 57 runs and 40 RBI. His 75 hits tie Brewer for the team lead. He also has 18 multiple-hit and eight multiple-RBI games.  In the field, McClure did not commit an error in his 72 fielding chance, which earned him one of the gold gloves awarded to three conference outfielders. 

Borberg came to JCCC this year to establish himself as a ligament starter after spending most of his freshman season at Illinois State as a reliever, and he has succeeded. He has made 16 appearances, all as a starter on the bump. He stands 10-1 with two complete games, one shutout, an ERA of 4.29 and 86 strikeouts in 71.1 innings of work. His 86 strikeouts are currently fifth in the conference standings and his 10.85 strikeouts-per-nine ratio is third. Borberg was twice selected as he KJCCC Pitcher of the Week, earning the honor in weeks three and six. has committed to Dallas Baptist University. 

Fleck is batting .363 (73-for-198) with eight doubles, a triple, two home runs,74 runs scored and 29 driven in. He has produced a team-high 23 multiple-hit games to go along six multi-RBI games. He has also drawn 48 walks, which lead the team and rank fifth in the conference. Fleck is also tied with Edwards in stolen bases with 24. In the field, he has a fielding percentage of .953 with 87 putouts, 118 assists and just 10 errors. 

Miller is hitting at a .373 clip (57-for-153) with 15 doubles, a triple, five homers, 44 runs and 48 RBI. He has tallied 16 multiple-hit games and 14 multiple-RBI games highlighted by a five-RBI effort in a win over Coffeyville. His 15 doubles are second-most on the team.

Golden is the third member of JCCC's starting rotation to be honored this year. He possesses a perfect 10-0 record with 77 strikeouts in 63.0 innings of work and an ERA of 4.14. Golden was twice selected as the KJCCC East Picher of the Week, earning the honor in weeks five and nine. 

Burkitt has made 14 appearances in the hill, six as a starter. He stands 5-3 with a 4.91 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched. Last season, he was selected as a second-team all-conference performer. Burkitt has committed to the University of Kansas.

Chambers has the most appearances on the mound for the Cavaliers hurlers his season with 20, two as a starter. He is 5-1 with a team-high five saves. He has 67 strikeouts in 58.1 innings of work with an ERA of 3.39, third-best on the staff. He was named the KJCC Pitcher of the Week in week 10. Chambers is also a repeat all-conference recipient earning first-team honors last year. He was also selected as a third-team All-American by JUCO Baseball Blog. Chambers has committed to Ball State University.
