No. 1 Johnson County pounds Shelton State 14-4 in World Series opener

GRAND JUNCION, Colo. – Top-seeded Johnson County posted a dominating 14-4 victory over No. 10 seed Shelton State in the opening round of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo., Saturday afternoon. 

The Cavaliers (53-11) pounded out 17 hits, including two home runs, to overpower Shelton Sate in a game shortened five innings by the 10-run rule. 

Johnson County scored three runs in third, four in the fourth and put the game away with six-run outburst in the fifth.  Competing in their fourth World Series, this is the first time the Cavaliers have won a first-round game. 

Five Johnson County players finished with multiple-hits in the game led left fielder by Miken Miller with a 4-for-4 day that included a double, with three runs scored and an RBI. 

Designed hitter Kyle Hepburn pounded out three hits including a home run to dive in three runs, and second baseman Jack Mosh and first baseman and KJCCC East MVP Dagen Brewer each collected three hits as well.  Two of Brewer's hits were for extra bases. He doubled in the third inning and tripled off the top of the wall in center field in the fourth finishing a home run shy of the cycle.  He also drove in three runs, while Mosh collected two RBI and scored three times. 

Leadoff hitter and third baseman Jake McClure ripped a single and a double to finish with two RBI. His first hit came with two outs in the second scoring Hepburn. He also started the decisive rally in the fourth inning with a double to right field.

KJCCC East Pitcher of the Year Brandon Stone was the beneficiary of the Cavaliers hot bats. The right-hander surrendered four runs off six hits while strikeout three to up his record season strikeout total to 113.  With the victory, Stone also set a new season mark in total victories with 14, moving pas Cole Koonce who set the record last season.

Johnson County will get a day of rest and will play Georgia Highland in a winner's bracket match up on Monday at 6 p.m. (MST).
