Kit Pellow is the only player in JCCC history to play in the Major Leagues. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1996 and steadily advanced through the organization, reaching Triple-A in his third year as a professional. He went on to became the all-time leader in home runs and RBI in Omaha Royals history.
On August 13, 2002, he was called up to the Majors and one night later was in the starting line up facing New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettit. Four days later, Pellow collected his first Major League hit, a single off Tonyon Sturtze of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Following that season, Pellow signed a free agent contract with the Colorado Rockies, and earned a late call up in the 2003 season. When the Rockies took the field on Opening Day in 2004, Pellow was in the starting line up in left field.
In three seasons in the Majors, Pellow played in 99 games and logged 202 at bats. His career average is .257 with 52 hits, nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBI. Pellow posted a fielding percentage of .964 playing five different positions; left field, right field, third base, first base and catcher. He played in 108 games, 43 as a starter.
After his Major League career came to an end, Pellow took his services to the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League, a AAA team. In 2008, Pellow captured the Mexican League Triple Crown after hitting .385 with 34 home runs and 107 RBI. He became only the seventh player in league history to accomplish the feat. The right-handed hitting first baseman turned in a record-breaking campaign that included 144 hits, 27 doubles, 273 total bases, a .459 on base percentage and a .730 slugging percentage.
In 2007, Pellow hit .322 with 19 doubles, 29 home runs and 83 RBI. He surpassed the 1,000 minor league games played mark that season. He has also amassed over 4,000 at bats, 200 doubles, 200 home runs and 800 RBI in a career that has taken him as far away as Korea with the Lotte Gians in 2005 and China with the La New Bears in 2007. Last year, Pellow, a former All-SEC performer at the University of Arkansas, was named HogNation.net 2007 Minor League Player of the Year, an honor given each year to a former Razorback that accomplishes the most in minor league baseball. He was the Hog in the Minors Player of the Week seven times in 2007.
