JCCC GOLDEN GIRLS DANCE TEAM AUDITIONS

ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO AUDITIONS AND ARE DUE BY WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17th, OR EARLIER. 

Thank you for expressing interest in the Johnson County Community College Golden Girls Dance Team. This year's auditions will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 in the Fieldhouse Gym located on the lower level (indoor track area) of the GYM building on the JCCC Campus.

Before auditions, please send the following: 

*          Audition Application -- submit online at www.jccc.edu/GoldenGirlsApp  or www.jcccathletics.com/sports/dance/Audition_Application_2024-25.pdf
*          A Short essay entitled Why I Want to be a Golden Girl
*          Recent photo, preferably in uniform (will not be returned)
*          Hold Harmless Agreement (must be signed by a parent if under age 18)
*          A letter of recommendation from a current or recent coach, dance instructor, etc. (recommended but not required) 

NOTE:   You also must complete and submit an Admissions Application to JCCC before auditions.

The audition schedule is as follows: (Times are approximate after 8:45am)
8:00am           Registration
8:30am           Meeting
8:45am           Clinic begins, routines are taught
10:30am         Round 1 Auditions in front of judging panel begin (Routines)
11:30pm         Round 2 Auditions in front of judging panel begin (Sideline, Cheer, Technique)
12:30pm         Round 3 Auditions in front of judging panel begin (Individual Interviews)

AUDITIONS:

  1. We are looking for:  versatility, the ability to perform many dance styles - jazz, hip-hop, cheer/pom, high-kick, etc.
  2. The ability to learn routines quickly.  Must use proper technique (formal dance training helpful but not required). 
  3. Must be a performer!
  4. Positive role models to represent JCCC

Auditions will consist of:

  1. Two short dance combinations, which may include up to three dance styles: Pom, Jazz, and Hip-Hop
  2. A short ‘Cheer’ and/or Sideline Routine:  looking at pom motions, game day energy
  3. Leap Combination:  any 1-2 eight count combination/sequence across the floor.  You will come up with this on your own and demonstrate individually.  Music will be provided.
    Turn Combination:  any 1-2 eight count combination/sequence center floor.  You will come up with this on your own and demonstrate individually.  Music will be provided.
  1. Interviews- personal questions about you to get to know you better.  No school trivia or trick questions will be asked.

Jazz and Hip-hop routines will be taught at auditions.  The Sideline routine will be posted on our Social Media sites and will need to be learned prior to auditions. 

Recommended Skills (these may or may not be in the choreographed routines):

  1. High kicks/tilt kicks (left & right), Splits (left & right), Toe Touch, Leg Grabs
  2. Leap Combinations: ie-  Split, Center, Switch Center, Switch Leaps, Calypso, etc.
  3. Pirouette Combinations: ie-  Double, Triple, and/or Quad Turns, Turns in Second, Leg Grab Turns, etc.

Audition Attire:
Fitted dance shorts, tights to match skin tone (optional), fitted sports bra or crop dance top or sports bra, and dance shoes or athletic shoes. Any combo of Navy, shades of blue, Gold, White or Black encouraged.  No pants or capris please.  Hair should be down and ‘glamorous’.  Please wear Performance/Game Day make-up.  Earring studs are fine, but all other piercings should be removed.  Please also cover any visible tattoos.  Look ‘Game Day’ ready!

  • Closed to all spectators, but the audition may be video-taped for judging purposes only. 
  • Cuts may be made after each round, depending on the number of candidates in attendance.
  • Results will be announced following auditions

Golden Girl positions are considered a 1-year position.  Each Golden Girl must re-audition each year.  We will typically choose a 12-15 member performance squad, who receive full-tuition scholarships, with the possibility of non-scholarshipped alternate positions.  Alternates have the same expectations as all other team members, and must be ready to perform with minimal notice.

Performances throughout the year include, but are not limited to: 

  1. JCCC Campus Kickoff Event
  2. Basketball Sidelines and Cheers for all Home Women’s and Men’s Games
  3. Half-time performances for all Home Women’s and Men’s Basketball Games
  4. Pep Rallies
  5. Jr/Sr Visit Days
  6. JCCC Campus Craze Event
  7. Assigned Events
  8. Community Events and Guest Performances
  9. Region 6 Competition, typically in March
  10. NDA Camp in late summer
  11. NDA Nationals in April

UNIFORMS:
Golden Girl uniforms, primary warm-ups, and bags will be provided throughout the year.

Golden Girls must purchase: 

  1. Shoes-1 pair: color and design designated by Coach.- Required
  2. Team Earrings, hose, tights, other designated under garments. - Required.
  3. Dance Pants and/or Shorts:  style and design designated by Coach. – Required.
  4. Alternative Warm-up/apparel:  camp-wear, t-shirt, sweat pants & jacket, back-pack, and any other extra items the team decides to purchase.  Some items are additional and not mandatory. 
  • Fundraisers will be provided to help purchase new uniforms, camp expenses, and national competition expenses.  All members must participate in all fundraisers.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any Golden Girl who does not perform in a professional manner and/or does not represent the position, team, and college in a positive light will be removed from the position on a temporary or permanent basis as the situation dictates.

APPEARANCE:
Golden Girls must maintain a professional appearance in costume, hair and make-up to remain congruent with others.  Hair should remain in natural colors throughout the year.  Tattoos cannot be visible during any performance or event, and all extra piercings will need to be removed. 

CORRESPONDENCE:
All correspondence and communication must be initiated by the candidate /Golden Girl and not another family member.

ATTENDANCE:
Golden Girls will attend all practices (including NDA Camp & summer practices) and performances.  All Golden Girls will be required to attend summer camp (late summer) and 2 summer weekend practices.  It is a time when members learn new routines, work on technique and become as one, a "TEAM".  Any exception to this requirement will have to be approved by the Golden Girls Coach in advance.

During the school year, Golden Girls hold practice every day, Monday-Friday from 8:00-10:00am.   Team members work with a Counselor to work out any class conflicts with practice times.  

RESULTS/ANNOUNCEMENT OF TEAM:

Results of auditions will be emailed out to all candidates 1-2 days following auditions.  

The first team meeting for those selected will be Tuesday, May 30 from 6:00-9:00pm.  This meeting is mandatory. 

Summer practices are tentatively scheduled on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m.-Noon, as well as 2-3 weekend practices throughout the summer 

Final scholarship positions may not be announced until after camp at the end of summer. 

EARLY AUDITIONS:

In the event a candidate cannot attend auditions or a portion of auditions due to competitions or graduation for example, an early audition may be scheduled during the week prior to the audition date. Please contact Coach Amy Sellers as early as possible to get this scheduled. Attendance at the actual audition is highly encouraged, even if just for a portion of the day, since projection and performance can be limited through video.
