JCCC outscores Allen 14-0 to sweep first conference series of the season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 7-ranked Johnson County Community College softball team posted a pair of shutouts to sweep Allen Community College in first conference series of the season, Thursday at the JCCC Softball Complex. The Lady Cavaliers opened with a 5-0 victory and completed the sweep with 9-0 victory. It was JCCC's seventh series sweep of the season.

In the opener freshman third baseman Aspen Burgardt blasted a solo homer run in the first and freshman shortstop Jalee Jefferson belted a two-run shot over center field in the third.

Sophomore left fielder Taryn Burkhardt also drove in a run, stole two bases and scored once.

In the circle, freshman right-hander Maria Hnverzagt scattered five hits and struck out three to earn the complete game shutuout and up her season mark to a perfect 7-0.

Johnson County made quick work in getting the victory in the second game, scoring three in the first, four in the second and two more in the third for the 9-0 five inning victory. 

In the second game the top four hitters in JCCC's line up drove in six of the nine runs.

Burkhardt, who led off the order, had a single, walk, two runs and two RBI. Freshman second baseman Izzy Carter had an RBI single. Jefferson had two hits, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI, and Burgardt ripped a two-run double.

Sophomore center fielder Eve Morris also drove in a run with a single and freshman DP Kaia Cordill finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. 

Freshman left-hander Kaelyn Conrad pitched four innings scoreless, two-hit ball while strikeout four batters. She now stands 6-1 on the season. Sophomore right-hander Deja Gardenhire closed out the game with a perfect fifth inning. 

Johnson County (21-5, 2-0) will host St. Louis Community College (21-5) in their final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 p.m., followed by a road conference twin bill at Fort Scott Community College (17-11, 2-0) on Thursday, April 4.
