
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 17-ranked Johnson County softball team opened Kansas Jayhawk Community College Division II play by sweeping Labette at home Thursday afternoon. The Cavaliers (15-10/2-0) opened with a 10-4 triumph followed by a 9-1 victory that ended after five innings.
In the first game and tied at 4-4 after five innings, Johnson County plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the 10-4 win. Freshman DP Lilly Hans doubled two drive in two runs, sophomore shortstop Izzy Carter belted a two-run triple, freshman third baseman Reagen Neitzel tripled in a run and sophomore second baseman Jaylee Jefferson hit into a fielder's choice to score a run. Hans and Neitzel also had an RBI earlier in the game.
Sophomore right-hander Brielle Dee began the game for JCCC. She surrendered seven hits and four runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out four.
Freshman right-hander Elsa Carrillo hurled two and one-third innings of scoreless relief, only allowing a walk with two strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Cavaliers secured the sweep with a 9-1 win the second game. Johnson County scored five runs in the second and four more in the third to put the game away early.
Hans went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Carter and freshman right fielder Katie Kolarik each drove in two runs, and Jefferson, freshman catcher Maddie Murray, sophomore first baseman Aspen Burgardt and freshman left fielder Makenzie Yoder each collected a single RBI. Yoder also stole three bases.
Sophomore Jalin Lavers earned the five-inning complete game victory. The right-hander allowed two runs and one run with six strikeouts.
Johnson County continues conference play on Saturday when the travel to Concordia, Kansas to take on Cloud County in a twin-bill.
