JCCC’s championship hopes kept alive with at-large bid

JCCC’s championship hopes kept alive with at-large bid

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women's soccer team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national tournament, receiving an at-large bid by the NJCAA Tuesday.  The tournament runs November 12-18 at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.

The Cavaliers, ranked No. 7 in the final NJCAA D-II Rankings, lost to Northeast 2-1 in the NJCAA North Plains District Championship on Saturday, but their body of work throughout the season was good enough for the selection committee to hand JCCC one of three at-large bids. The other two earning at-large bids were Holmes Community College and Jones Community College.

JCCC head coach Jim Schwab said it meant a great deal for his team to have this opportunity.

"This is an incredible opportunity for our team to represent JCCC at the National Tournament," said JCCC head coach Jim Schwab. "It shows our strength of schedule and all the hard work our team put in this year. We know we did not achieve our ultimate goal to win a direct bid, but to get a second chance to continue our season and compete for a national championship is an amazing opportunity for us. We are very excited to represent our school in Tucson."

Johnson County (15-3-2) received the seventh seed and was placed in the Pool B bracket with No. 2 seed Northwest Mississippi (20-1-0) and No. 11 seed Rock Valley (16-2-3).  The Cavaliers will open pool play on November 13 against Rock Valley at 12:30 p.m. MST and a day later face Northwest Mississippi also at 12:30 p.m. MST.

This is Johnson County's second trip to nationals, but first in Division II. The Cavaliers last qualified in 2009 and finished runner-up to Tyler Junior College.
