JCCC volleyball back on winning track

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After suffering an upset loss at Cloud County on March 9, the No. 3-ranked Johnson County volleyball team rebounded three impressive wins to close out last week's action. 

On Thursday, March 11, the Lady Cavaliers swept Labette 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-9), and followed with a 3-1 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20).  Two days later they downed No. 10-ranked Highland in three straight sets (29-27, 26-24, 25-23).  JCCC now stands 14-2 overall, and still in first place in the conference with a 12-2 mark. 

For the week, sophomore Mikayla Powell tallied 56 kills, an average of 4.0 kills-per-set,  and a hitting percentage of .354 in four matches last week. She average 4.0 kill. For the season, Powell ranks fifth in the Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference with 195 total kills, fourth in kills-per-set at 3.75 and sixth in hitting percentage at .336. 

Sophomore setter Kallie Fenscke recorded 92 assists, an average of 6.6 per set, over four matches last week.  In a four-set win over NEO A&M Fenscke matched her season high for assists with 30. On the season she has tallied 329 total assists and average 5.58 per set.  She has reached double figures in assists in all 16 matches she has played this season. She currently need one more assist to reach 1,000 for her career. 

Sophomore libero Makenzie Griffel reached double figures in all four matches to finish with 61 total digs last week.  She also had one service reception error out of 75 attempts. For the season, Griffel leads JCCC and ranks fourth in KJCCC D-II with 300 digs, and her 5.08 digs-per-set average is third-best.  She has been in double figures in all 16 matches played. 

Johnson County has three matches scheduled for this week beginning at home against Fort Scott (10-7, 9-6) on Tuesday, March 16 at 6 p.m.  They follow with road matches against NEO A&M on Thursday, March 18, and Neosho County (9-6, 8-5) on Saturday, March 20.
