Seven JCCC volleyball players selected all-conference

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 2020-21 Johnson County volleyball team tied a record set in 1989 with seven players earning Division II All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors. 

Sophomores Mikayla Powell and Gracie LaForge first-team selections.  Sophomores Kallie Fenscke and Makenzie Griffel earned second-team honors, and freshmen Sydney Healy and Ryleigh McBurney and sophomore Brooke Wroten were named honorable mention.  Powell, LaFroge and Griffel were also selected as first-team All-Region VI/Plains District A performers, and Fenscke and McBurney were second-team selections. 

In addition, JCCC head coach Jennifer Ei was selected the KJCCC D-II Volleyball Coach of the Year. This is the third time she has earned this honor in her 13-year career. 

Powell, a first-team all-conference and all-region pick as a freshman, ranks fourth in the conference and sixth in the NJCAA with 306 kills, and her kills-per-set average of 3.64 is fourth and 20 respectively. She also ranks second in the conference and 15th in the NJCAA in kill percentage at .365. Powell has topped double figures in kills in 20 of the 23 matches she has played this season. She has hit over .400 in 14 matches, including a season-best .700 in the Region VI/Plains District A Championship Match. Twice this season, Powell was selected the KJCCC D-II Offensive Player of the Week. 

LaForge, who was a second-team all-conference pick last year,  leads the conference and ranks 12th in the NJCAA with a kill percentage of .371. She ranks 11th in the conference and 31st in the NJCAA with 243 kills. LaForge has registered double figures in kills in 10 matches and has hit .400 or better 10 times, with a season-best .750 in a win over Cloud County. 

Fenscke leads the team and ranks eighth in the conference with 559 assists, and ranks seventh in assists-per-set at 6.14. Her total assists rank 20th in the NJCAA.  Fenscke has registered double figures in assists in all 25 matches this season including a new career high of 40 in a win over Allen. She has tallied 1,229 career assists, which has her sitting at No. 15 all-time. Twice this season Fenscke was selected the KJCCC D-II Setter of the Week. 

Griffel ranks third in the conference and eighth in the NJCAA with 433 digs. Her digs-per-set of 4.76 is fourth in the conference. She currently has 717 career digs with rank 15th all-time. Griffel has registered double-digits in digs in 24 of the 25 matches this year, including 11 with 20 or more. She also leads the conference with 39 service aces. Three times during the campaign, Griffel was named the KJCCC D-II Defensive Player of the Week. 

Healy ranks third on the team with 232 kills and a with a kills-per-set of 2.64. Her kill percentage  of .219 is fifth-best on the team. She also has 107 digs and 42 blocks. On the season, Healy has 13 matches of 10+ kills, five matches of 10+ digs and three double-doubles. 

McBurney ranks second on the team and ninth in the conference with 537 assist, and she is eight in the KJCCC in assists-per-set at 5.90. Her total assists rank 27th in the NJCAA. McBurney has registered double figures in 24 of the 25 matches played this season, including 11 with 20 or more. 

Wroten has 108 kills on the season with a kills-per-set average of 1.69. She ranks third on the team in kill percentage at .292. She also has 34 digs and 45 blocks.
