JCCC lands five on the All-KJCCC D-II Volleyball Team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County volleyball program was well represented on the 2023 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference D-II team with five selections, recently announced by the conference. 

Sophomore outside/right side hitter Sarina Ulberg was named to the first-team. Sophomore libero Emily Silvers and freshman right side hitter Kennedy Smalley earned second-team honors, and sophomore setter Sydney Fiatte and freshman outside/middle hitter Bella Hedke sere selected honorable mention.

These five helped JCCC to a 32-3 record, a runner-up finish in the conference, a district championship and a No. 4 seed in the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ulberg leads the team, ranks nineth in the conference and 62nd in the NJCAA with 333 total kills entering the national tournament. Her .317 kill percentage ranks fourth in the conference and 24th nationally, and her 3.00 kills-per-set average is seventh best in KJCCC D-II. Ulberg has reached double figures in kills in 19 matches, highlighted by a career high 18 in a 3-1 win over Neosho County October 25. In week seven of the season, she was selected the KJCCC D-II Offensive Player of the Week.

Silvers leads the team and ranks sixth in the conference with 451 digs. Her 4.56 digs-per-set average also ranks sixth in KJCCC D-II. She has topped double figures in digs in 22 matches and reached 20+ digs eight times, highlighted by a career high 29 in a 3-1 loss No. 11 ranked Kirkwood on October 7. In the District Championship Match, Silvers tallied 17 digs to helped JCCC to a sweep over Neosho County and punch the team's ticket to the national tournament. 

Smalley ranks second on the team with 234 kills and is tied for third with 198 digs. Her 2.52 kills-per-set average ranks 14th in the conference, and her .275 kill percentage is tied for seventh. She has reached double figures in kills in seven matches. Also topped double figures in digs seven times. 

Fiatte leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with 715 assists. She also leads the team with 46 aces. Her 715 assists rank 29th on JCCC's season chart. Her assists-per-set average of 6.06 ranks sixth in the conference. She has topped double figures in assists in all 35 matches. She has topped 20+ assists 17 times and 30+ twice highlighted by a career high 37 against No. 11 ranked Kirkwood.  For her career, Fiatte has 1,097 assists which ranks 20th all-time. 

Hedke has tallied 163 kills, a kill percentage of .275 and 40 digs. She also leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with 115 blocks. In the district championship match, Hedke led the team with nine kills, helping JCCC sweep Neosho County and punch their ticket to the national tournament.
