OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 12th-ranked Johnson County baseball team put up a record performance while demolishing Ottawa University JV yesterday 37-2. The 37 runs set a new game record, breaking the old mark of 35 in a win over Haskell Indian Nations in 2002. The 35-run margin also is a new game record, breaking the old mark of 32 in that win over Haskell. This is the third time the Cavaliers have scored 30 or more runs. The other time they plated 32 in a win over Barton in 1980.
As a team, Johnson County hit .537 for the game (29-for-54) and hit six doubles, three triples and four home runs.
Freshman second baseman Garrett Wood and freshman centerfielder Landen Wood contributed most of the damage. Garrett Wood had a single, double and home run, scored three times and drove in a season-high seven runs. His seven-RBI effort ties the sixth-best game in team history. Five players have had an eight-RBI game.
Landed Wood had four hits, including a double and a triple, scored a game-high four times and drove in four runs.
Freshman catcher Noah Cook and freshman outfielder Derek Abeln also put up big numbers. Cook had a triple and home run and drove in six runs. His 6-RBI day ties the 10-best single game at JCCC. Abeln had a double and home run, scored three times and drove in four runners.
Six other players also had multiple-hits in the win. Sophomore Anthony Amicangelo (2B, 3B, 2 RBI), sophomore Malik Williams (1B, HR, 2 RBI), freshman Anthony Slaughter (2-1B, 1 RBI), sophomore Blake Shannon (2-1B, 1 RBI), sophomore Mason Hartman (3-1B, 2 RBI), and freshman Vince Donato (2-1B).
Head coach Kent Shelley used seven different pitchers, each going one inning. They combined to strikeout 14 batters. Freshman right-hander Jon Moll got the start and earned his second win of the season.
