JCCC sweeps Allen to close out regular season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County baseball team put a final stamp to its 2022 regular season with an impressive four-game sweep over Allen.  The Cavaliers outscored the Red Devils 49-to-5 and over their last eight games, JCCC has scored 105 runs while only giving up 12. 

The Cavaliers took the first games at home on Friday afternoon, winning 8-1 and 10-1. A day later at Allen, the Cavaliers pounded the Red Devils 16-0 and 15-3. With the sweep, Johnson County improved to 41-15, making Eric Horner the only head coach in team history to post back-to-back 40-win seasons to start their career. 

In the opener, Greg Ziegler belted a two-run home run and Colin Brueggemann had a single and a double to drive in two to pace the Cavaliers. 

Right-hander Danny Trehey, who hurled a no-hitter is previous outing, allowed one run off three hits and struck out six in five innings of work. Right-hander Gabe Nutter closed out the final two innings allowing just one base runner with a walk. 

In the second game, Brueggemann, Quinton Hall and Will Hudler all went yard. Hall drove in three runs along with Nick Iannantone, and Brueggeman had two RBI. 

Left-hander Trent Martin pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory. 

In the opener Saturday at Allen, Ziegler belted his second homer of the series. He also had a double, scored three times and drove in three runs.  Cooper Combs, Hall, Jeremy Rader and Brett Bulkeley were each credited with two RBI. 

Left-hander Max Chapman earned the complete game victory. He scattered four singles, walked a batter and struck out seven over five innings. 

In the final game, the top of the order combined for nine hits and eight runs. Blake Mozley had two singles and a double, scored twice and drove in a run. Ziegler ripped two doubles and a single and scored three run, and Combs went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Hall was the clean-up hitter and he led the team with four RBI. 

Noah Steele and Hudler each drove in two runs, and Jaxson Wentworth got on base four times with a single and three walks. He also scored three times and drove in one run.
