JCCC Baseball ranked in two first regular season polls, Combs nabs KJCCC Player of the Week

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The first regular season baseball rankings were recently released, and Johnson County moved up to No. 12 in the first NJCAA regular season poll, up from No. 18 preseason. The Cavalier also earned the No. 17 ranking in the first regular season poll released by Dream Big Athletics.   

Johnson County is off to a hot start to its 2023 season. They currently stand 12-2 overall and are on a 10-game winning streak.  

Additionally, Johnson County has had four players earned weekly honors by the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Most recently, sophomore outfielder Cooper Combs was selected the KJCCC Player of the Week for week four.  Combs helped lead the Cavaliers to a four-game sweep over North Iowa Area over the weekend.  He hit .533 with a double, home run, eight runs scored and nine driven in. He posted multiple-RBI in three of the four games. In the final game of the series, Combs was 4-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI. His two-run homer in the fifth in the third game of the series put JCCC up 3-0 on their way to a 12-2 victory. 

The three weekly honors went to so freshman outfielder Brayden Luikart and sophomore left-handed pitcher Luc Fladda in week. 2, and sophomore right-handed pitcher Gabe Nutter in week 3. 

Johnson County starts a four-game home-and-home series with Cloud County of the West Jayhawk Conference. The first two games will be in Concordia, Kan., March 2 followed by two games at JCCC on Saturday, March 4. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
