Cavaliers sweep conference series with Coffeyville

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 8-ranked Johnson County baseball team improved to 23-4 overall and 8-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk East Conference with a four-game sweep over Coffeyville last week. The Cavaliers opened the series with wins of 8-5 and 13-4 in Coffeyville on Wednesday, March 15, and completed with sweep with wins of 2-1 and 13-3 on Sunday, March 19 at JCCC.

In the first game, third baseman Jeremy Rader ripped two double,  drove in two runs and scored twice. Center fielder Rhett Hendricks had two singles, two runs scored and an RBI. Shortstop Dylan Hufft drove in two runs and DH Nicholas Sall belted a solo home run to pace the Cavaliers.

In the second game, Hendricks had a double, a home run and three RBI and first baseman Ryan Callahan collected three hits and two RBI.

Right-hander Cole Koonce logged 5.1 innings in the start. He allowed three runs, two earned and struck out a season high 12 batters. 

The third game of the series proved to be pitcher's dual. Left-hander Ty Blecha earned the complete game victory. He allowed one run off four hits with nine strikeouts. Huftt and catcher Kyle Hepburn each drove in a run. 

In the final game, JCCC got home runs from left fielder Cooper Combs, DH Dagen Brewer and shortstop Jordan Black. Combs also had a double and a single, scored three runs and drove in three.  Black also hit two singles and drove in three runs.

Right-hander Gabe Nutter allowed three runs, one earned and struck out 10 to earn the victory. 

The Cavaliers open a four-game conference series Thursday, March 23 against cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas at JCCC. They travel to KCKCCC for the final two games on Saturday, March 25.
