JCCC baseball completes sweep over KCKCC to remain undefeated in conference play

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After taking the first two games in the series with Kansas City Kansas on Thursday, the No. 8-ranked Johnson County baseball team completed the four-game sweep over the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon at Kansas City, Kan. The Cavaliers won 6-4 and 12-2 to improve to 27-4 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference play 12-0. 

In the first game of the doubleheader, JCCC first baseman Ryan Callahan belted a three-run homer run and an RBI double to pace the Cavaliers offense. He also had a single to go 3-for-4 on the day, and score two runs. 

Catcher Shea McGahan also drove in a run with a single. 

Left-hander Ty  Becha improved to 6-1 on the season. He allowed four runs, two earned, off eight hits and struck out four over 5.2 innings of work.  Right-hander Maddox Burkitt logged the final 1.1 inning and allowed just a hit while striking out three batters. 

In the second game, five Cavaliers drove in multiple runs, led by second baseman Easton Elliot with three RBI off two singles. 

Third baseman Jeremy Rader was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Shortstop Dylan Hufft had two singles and two RBI. Center fielder Rhett Hendricks was two-for-4 with two walks, four runs scored and two driven in, and catcher Kyle Hepburn had single, a double and drove in two.

Johnson County out hit KCKCC 15-to-4 and drew nine total walks in the game. 

Right-hander Gabe Nutter upped his season mark to 3-0.  In his five innings on the hill, Nutter allowed just one run off three hits and struck out five. Left-hander Michael Infranca and right-hander Christian Johnson closed out the final two innings.

Johnson County will take the field again Tuesday, March 28, when they travel to Atchison, Kan., take on Benedictine JV at 3 p.m.., followed by a four-game conference series against Allen. The first two of the series will take place in Iola, Kan., on Thursday, March 30, and will close at JCCC on Saturday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
