JCCC baseball moves up to No. 4 in NJCAA Rankings

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – As the Johnson County baseball team heads into its final week of the regular season, they will do so as the No. 4 ranked team in NJCAA Division I, moving up spot from last week. 

Having already secured the Kansas Jayhawk Conference East Division title, the Cavaliers will look to break a school record for most regular season wins when they face Labette in a four-game home-and-home series this coming Thursday and Saturday. Johnson County currently had a record of 45-7 which has them one victory shy of the most regular season wins in team history. Twice JCCC won 46 regular season games, the first time in 1985 and then again 30 years later in 2015. The record for most total wins including postseason is 50 set in 2014. 

The Cavaliers are coming off a four-game non-conference sweep over Baker University JV.  The first two games were on the road with JCCC prevailing 15-10 and 7-4. They returned home and closed out the series with 11-1 and 17-1 victories. 

Freshman infielder Jordan Black took advantage of getting on the field batting .583 (7-for-13) with two doubles, a home run, three stolen bases, five runs and nine RBI over the series. He drove in four in the opener and two each in games three and four. He hit a two-run homer in second game. 

Also in the first game, freshman center field Rhett Hendricks also drove in four runs with a pair of singles and freshman catcher Kyle Hepburn drove in two with a double, and in the third game ripped three singles to drive in three runs. 

Freshman infielder Blake Martin was 5-for-7 with a double, two runs and two RBI playing in two games. 

Freshman right fielder Brayden Luikart had a home run, three walks, two runs and two RBI in the second game, and had a double, a walk, drove in a run and scored twice in the final game. 

Sophomore third baseman Jeremy Rader also played in the second and fourth games and came away with three hits, two runs and three RBI. 

Sophomore Shea McGahan got the call to start behind the plate in the final game and he did some damage with his bat. He was a home run shy of a cycle while driving a season-high four runs, and freshman Dagen Brewer drove in three runs with two doubles and a home run. 

On the hill, head coach Eric Horner used 16 different pitchers over the series. Freshman right-hander Max Colombo notched first collegiate victory in the first game, logging the final two innings. Sophomore right-hander Cole Koonce improved to 11-1 on the season getting the victory in game two. Sophomore right-hander John Harrick was credited with the save. Sophomore left-hander Ty Blecha upped his season mark to 8-3 after getting the win in game three and freshman right-hander John Chambers was the pitcher of record in game four and improved his season mark to 4-0.
