JCCC takes first two games of four-game series with Southwestern

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 8-ranked Johnson County baseball team will look to win their first series of the 2024 season after taking the first two games against Southwestern on Sunday afternoon at the JCCC Baseball Complex.

The Cavaliers outscored the Spartans 22-to-4 in the two games, winning 12-3 and 10-1 to up their season mark to 6-4.  Southwestern falls to 1-5 overall. The two teams will play the final two games of the series Monday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. 

In the opener, JCCC scored two in the bottom of the first then exploded for six runs in the third inning. 

Sophomore second baseman Jack Mosh, a transfer from Missouri, collected a single and double and drove in run, and sophomore third baseman Jordan Black and freshman right fielder Miken Miller each drove in two runs to pace the Cavaliers offense. 

Freshman shortstop Maddux Fleck also had an RBI single and scored a run and freshman outfielder Ryker Edwards singled, walked, scored a run and stole four bases. 

Sophomore right-hand pitcher Ryan Borberg, a transfer from Illinois State, posted the best outing by a JCCC pitcher this season. He allowed just one hit, one walk, no runs while striking out 11 batters over five innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season.

In the second game, the number four and five hitters in the lineup, Mosh and sophomore catcher Kyle Hepburn provided most of the damage. Mosh went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs and three RBI. Hepburn was one better, going 4-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and three driven in. 

Fleck collected two more hits and scored twice, Black drove in a run and Edwards had two singles, walked and stole five baes, tying the second highest game total in program history. His nine total steals over the two games are the most by any player ever in JCCC history. 

On the hill, freshman right-hander Brandon Stone was solid, allowing just one run off five hits with seven strikeouts over six innings. With the win, Stone improves to 3-0 on the season.

Sophomore right-hand pitcher Austin Berggren, a transfer from Nebraska, struck out three with two scoreless innings and sophomore right-hander Landon Fulk pitched the final inning and struck out two batters.
