Four Cavaliers make national Top-30 JUCO rankings

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College freshman pitcher Brandon Stone, sophomore first baseman Dagen Brewer, sophomore second baseman Jack Mosh and sophomore pitcher Ryan Borberg recently appeared in Dream Big Athletics' JUCO Top-30 rankings for pitchers and hitters in 2024.  Stone is ranked as the No. 1 overall pitcher.  Brewer is ranked No. 9 among the top hitters in junior college baseball. Mosh came in ranked No. 16 among hitters and Borberg is the No. 23 ranked pitcher. 

Earlier this week, Stone and Brewer were named as first-team All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings.

All four players were also named as Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference East Division performers. Stone, Brewer and Mosh were first-team selections, and Borberg drew second-team honors. Brewer was also named MVP of the conference and Stone was the Pitcher of the Year.  

These four were instrumental in helping lead the Cavaliers to a number one ranking in the final NJCAA Poll with 53-13 record, while winning conference and region titles and sixth place finish at the 2024 NCAA D-I World Series. 

Stone, a big right-hander out of Shawnee Mission West, has a fastball that sits in the low 90s, a tight slider, a curveball, and a change-up that he can locate low in the zone.

Stone not only had one of the best pitching seasons by a freshman in Johnson County history, but his numbers also rank him among the best in team history. The conference leader in strikeouts this season, Stone, who was selected as the No. 1 pitcher by Dream Big Athletics for 2024, mowed down a new program record 113 batters in 104 and one-third innings pitched. He finished14-1 with an ERA of 3.28. He also led the conference in victories and innings pitched and ranked fourth in ERA and WHIP (1.05). Nationally, he ranked for first in wins and innings pitched, tied for fifth in strikeouts and tied for 14th in WHIP. Stone was honored as the East Pitcher of the Week in week 11. He has committed to the University of South Carolina.

Brewer put together a tremendous campaign for Johnson County batting a team-best .422 (78-for-185) with 22 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 42 extra base hits, 66 runs and 88 runs driven in. He led the conference in both extra base hits and RBI, ranked second in doubles and slugging percentage (.854), fourth in home runs, fifth in batting average and tied for eighth in hits.  Brewer produced 23 multiple-hit games highlighted by a five-hit, four-home run, nine-RBI performance in a win at Fort Scott. His four homers and nine RBI set new school records and tied the conference record for home runs and tied the third-best conference game RBI total ever. He also led the team with 26 multi-RBI games which rank as the second-most recorded in a season in program history. Brewer was honored as the East Division Player of the Week three times in 2024, earning the award in weeks six, seven and 14. Last season Brewer was selected as the East Jayhawk Conference Co-Freshman of the Year. He has committed to Pittsburg State University. 

Mosh, a transfer from Missouri, batted .389 (81-for-208) with 14 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 65 runs scored and 51 runs driven in. He also drew 42 free passes, second on the team and tied for 10th in the conference. Mosh produced 22 multiple-hit games, third most on the team, and 12 multiple-RBI which tie for fifth. He flashed a solid glove in field as well, making just four errors in 184 chances, good for a .978 fielding percentage. Mosh put together a solid postseason for the Cavaliers. In the Region 6 Tournament, he batted .423 (11-for-26) with three doubles, seven runs scored and six driven in. He followed by going 4-for-10 in the World Series highlighted by a three-hit, three-run game in a 14-4 win over Shelton State in the opening round. His three hits and three runs scored tie for second-most in a World Series game in team history. Overall, this four hits tie for fourth-most in a World Series play. Mosh was honored as the KJCCC East Player of the Week in week three this season. He will continue his career at the University of Minnesota.

Borberg, a transfer right-hander from Illinois State, made 17 appearances, all as a starter on the bump. He finished 10-2 with two complete games, one shutout, an earned run average of 4.34 and 91 strikeouts in 76 and two-thirds innings of work. His 91 strikeouts and 10 wins ranked fourth in the conference standings and his 10.68 strikeouts-per-nine ratio ranked third. Nationally he ranked tied for 14th in victories and 31st in strikeouts. His 10 wins also rank tied for sixth on JCCC's season chart, and his 91 strikeouts rank ninth. He also ranks second at JCCC in games started. Twice during the season, he was selected at the KJCCC East Pitcher of the Week, earning the award in weeks three and six. Borberg will continue his career at Dallas Baptist University.
