Cavaliers take final two games to win series against Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas – After splitting the season opening doubleheader on Saturday against Amarillo, the No. 5-ranked Johnson County baseball team won the season opening series taking both games on Sunday at HODGETOWN. 

The Cavaliers opened the day with a 18-5 victory over the Badgers, which gave head coach Eric Horner his 200th win. They capped the day with a 14-4 win. 

First baseman Easton Roe led JCCC with two home runs, a double, a triple and drove in six runs. He hit a solo homer in the first, had an RBI double in the fourth, hit a two-run shot in the fifth and ripped a two-run triple in the sixth.

Right fielder Austin Hartwig went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI and third baseman Carter Kelley drove in three runs with an RBI single and a two-run homer. 

Coltin Watkins started on the hill for the Cavaliers. The left-hander allowed two hits and two runs, one earned, over four innings, striking out five. Right-hander Ronin Vicenti, left-hander Cooper Westra and right-hander Luke Fricker each appeared in relief for JCCC. 

In the final game, catcher Boston Bruce provided the big bat for the Cavaliers, belting two home runs while driving in five. His two-run shot in the second put JCCC up 3-1 and his three-run blast in the third made 7-1. 

Roe also collected two more extra base hits with a solo homer in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth. For the series, Roe was 8-for-15 with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 driven in. 

Kelley and right fielder Drew Veatch also collected multiple hits in the game. 

Denton Biller got the start for the Cavaliers. The right-hander gave up three hits and one run over four innings, striking out four batters. Right-hander Christian Bobzin, right-hander Max Waldschmidt and right-hander Dylan Graebener ach appeared in relief for Johnson County.

The Cavaliers will embark on a four-game home-and-home series with Crowder on Thursday, February 6 in Neosho, Mo., and return home to host the Roughriders on Saturday, February 8 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
