No. 8 Johnson County completes series sweep over Iowa Central

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -  The No. 8 ranked Johnson County Community College softball team completed a series sweep over Iowa Central Community College Monday afternoon from the JCCC Softball Complex.  The Lady Cavaliers opened with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory in the first game and capped the sweep with 9-4 victory in game two. With the sweep JCCC evened its season mark to 3-3. 

Sophomore outfielder Eve Morris led the way going 7-for-8 in the series, with three doubles, a home run, five runs scored, three RBI and two stolen bases. 

In the opening game, Morris collected four hits in four at bats. She doubled in first inning, singled in the third and fifth innings and blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Lady Cavaliers on top 7-6. 

Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman shortstop Jaylee Jefferson led of the inning with her second double of the game.  Sophomore catcher Riahn Pinkerton laced a single to up the middle scoring Jefferson. 

Freshman infielder Izzy Carter came in to run for Pinkerton and advanced to second on a single to center field  by sophomore outfielder Gracie Ramsey. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, then sophomore outfielder Taryn Burkhardt drove in Carter with a sacrifice fly to pull JCCC to within a run. Morris followed with her blast to make it 7-6. 

Other key performances were turned in by sophomore first baseman Kate Ediger who picked up a single, a double and an RBI, and freshman Aspen Burgardt ripped an RBI double in the third inning. 

Maggie McNally got the start and surrendered two hits and four runs over three and two-third innings. Freshman Kaelyn Conrad appeared in relief and earned the win. She allowed two runs off three hits and struck out two in her 3.1 innings of work.

 In the second game, Bugardt had the hot bat, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and two runs driven in. She doubled in the first, third and fifth innings, and singled in the sixth. Her three doubles tie for the third-most in a game in program history. 

Iowa Central took an early 1-0 lead on a homer by Kaylee Cary in the second inning, but JCCC responded in the bottom half with 3 runs.

Iowa Central came back to take a 4-3 lead after a two-run shot by Aleena Sandy.

JCCC flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 9-4 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Burgardt that drove in two. 

Morris went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Sophomore catcher Hannah Archdekin collected a single, a double and scored twice, freshman DP Macee Moore drove in three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly and Carter drove in two runs.

Conrad earned a complete game victory to improve her mark to 2-0 on the season. She surrendered eight hits and four runs with four strikeouts over seven innings.

JCCC returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon to host Barton Community College, a Division I program in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference.  Johnson County is 37-12 all-time against the Courgars, but this will mark the first meeting against Barton for coach Aubree Brattin-Volkens in her 13 seasons leading the Lady Cavaliers.
