JCCC softball maintains No. 7 ranking in NJCAA D-II Poll

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College women's softball team stayed put in this week's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Poll, coming at No. 7 for the third consecutive week.  The Lady Cavaliers have been ranked in the top-10 in all seven polls this season.

Under the direction of head coach Aubree Brattin-Volkens, the JCCC softball program has been ranked nationally in 91 of 115 polls (79%) and in the top-10 in 42 of 115 polls (37%). 

Through 26 games this season, the Lady Cavaliers lead the country in doubles with 96, rank third in extra base hits with 138, third in slugging percentage (.689), 10th in total bases (503), 10th in batting average (.395) and 12th in home runs with 35.

Freshman infielder Aspen Burgardt is the team leading hitter with a .582 average. She ranks 10th nationally in doubles (14) home runs (13), total bases (97) and 11th in RBI (43).  She also leads the team with 10 multiple-RBI games, highlighted by three games when she drove in five runs. She also has two grand slams to her credit with also lead the team. 

Overall, 13 of JCCC's 15 players are hitting over .300, six of which are above the .400 mark including Burgardt. Other .400+ hitters are sophomore outfielder Eve Morris (.463), sophomore catcher/third baseman Riahn Pinkerton (.450), sophomore first baseman Kate Ediger (.434), freshman catcher Macee Moore (.429), sophomore DP Deja Gardenhire (.417) and sophomore outfielder Taryn Burkhardt (.415). Just three points shy of .400 is freshman shortstop Jaylee Jefferson at .397, who is second on the team with 34 RBI. 

In the circle, freshman right-hander Mariah Unverzagt leads the staff with a perfect 7-0 record with 17 strikeouts over 41.2 innings and an earned run average of 3.70.  Sophomore lefty Kaia Cordill is close behind at 6-1 overall, with a save and 34 strikeouts over 45.0 innings of work.  Freshman right-hander Jalin Lavers boasts a 5-1 mark with 29 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched, and she leads the staff with four complete games. Sophomore Maggie McNally has recorded the most strikeouts for JCCC with 37 over 38 innings and leads the team with seven starts and two shutouts. She is currently 3-3 overall.

Johnson County (21-5, 2-0) is hosting its final non-conference series against St. Louis Community College Tuesday, April 2, before playing 10 straight series against conference opponents.
