JCCC falls 11-9 to Fort Scott in Region 6 Championship

TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 1 seed and seventh ranked Johnson County Community College softball team saw its season come to an end Friday afternoon dropping an 11-9 decision in the NJCAA Region 6 Division II Championship to No. 5 seed Fort Scott Community College (39-17) at Lake Shawnee Softball Complex in Topeka.

The Lady Cavaliers (44-10) will now have to wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to compete in the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series May 20-25 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Trailing 5-1 in the top third the Lady Cavaliers pulled even with an RBI double from Aspen Burgardt and three-run home run from Kate Edgier, but Fort Scott quickly responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and plated four more in the bottom of the fourth to build a six-run lead 11-5.

Johnson County mounted a comeback in the top the sixth and pulled to within two runs, but ran out of outs, and finished the season with a mark of 44-10. 

Johnson County advanced to the championship game with a 9-4 win over Neosho County in the consolation final. 

Ediger went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three driven in, and Jaylee Jefferson had a double and home run, scored twice and drove in three runs. 

Maggie McNally earned the complete game victory. The right-hander allowed four runs off seven hits and struck out four. 

Burgardt, Jefferson and McNally were selected to the all-tournament team.  Burgardt hit .435 in the tournament (10-for-23) with four doubles, a home run, four runs and four RBI. Jefferson hit .318 (7-for-22) with two doubles, three homers, four runs and nine RBI and McNally was 2-1 with 22 strikeouts.
