JCCC moves into the top 10 nationally then downs No. 18 KCKCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – On Monday afternoon, the Johnson County Community College volleyball team jumped four spots in the NJCAA D-II poll from No. 11 to No. 7, and that evening they proved their lofty ranking with a 3-1 road victory over No. 18-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College. The win improves JCCC to 3-0 and 2-0 in the conference, while KCKCC falls to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the KJCCC.

The host Lady Blue Devils took the early lead with a 25-16 victory in first set, but the Lady Cavalier rallied to win three straight and take the match with set win of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-23. 

Sophomore right-side hitter Mikayla Powell tallied 19 kills, just one of her career-best 20 kills in her previous match. She only had four errors in 40 attempts for a kill percentage of .375. 

Freshman outsider hitter Sydney Healy finished in double figures in both kills and digs for the third straight match. She contributed 13 kills, a kill percentage of .216 and a season-high 16 digs. 

Sophomore defensive specialist Makenzie Griffel, the week two conference defensive player of week, recorded as season-high 25 digs to lead the squad. 

Freshman defensive specialist/libero Maddie Steiner also toped double digits in digs with 14, matching her season-best total. 

Freshman setter Ryleigh McBurney and sophomore setter Kallie Fenscke shared quarterbacking the offense, combining for 45 assists. McBurney led with 28, followed 17 from Fenscke. 

Sophomore outside hitters Shannon Riley and Gracie LaForge also posted solid numbers. Riley contributed eight kills and seven digs, and LaForge finished with nine kills, six digs and team-high two aces. 

Johnson County is back in action on Thursday, February 4 at Hesston College, and then back at home on Saturday, February 6 against Cloud County Community College and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Match times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
