Volleyball team sweeps Cowley, and improve to 7-1 overall

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County volleyball team, currently ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II, swept Cowley College Tuesday, February 23rd, at JCCC Gymnasium.

While the Lady Cavaliers won all three sets, the scores of the sets were close. JCCC won 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22, and now stand 7-1 overall, and 6-1 in conference, tied for second with Highland Community College. Cowley fell to 5-6 overall, and to 3-6 in the conference. JCCC now leads the all-time series with the Tigers, 58-31-2. 

Johnson County had two players finish in double figures kills, led by freshman outside hitter Sydney Healy with 14. She has reached double digits in kills in seven of the team's eight matches.  She also posted a season-best kill percentage of .571.

Sophomore outside/right-side hitter Shannon Riley added 10 kills in the victory. It was her second straight match in double figures, and third overall on the season. 

Freshman outside/right-side hitter Alyssa Smith and sophomore outside hitter Gracie LaForge each contributed seven kills. Smith was also credited with 12 digs, 

Sophomore defensive specialist Makenzie Griffel led the team with 13 digs, extending her string to eight straight matches reaching double figures. 

Freshman setter Ryleigh McBurney and sophomore Kallie Fenscke were solid in running the offense. McBurney tallied 26 assists, and Fenscke finished 15.  McBurney has topped 20-or-more assists in all eight matches this season. 

Johnson County will host No. 9-ranked Neosho County on Thursday, February 25 at 6 p.m. The Panthers are currently in first place in the conference with a 6-0 record. They stand 6-1 overall.  The Lady Cavaliers are 67-11 all-time against Neosho County. Their last loss to Neosho County was in the Region VI playoffs in 2017.
