
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 5th-ranked Johnson County volleyball team won three matches in three days this past week to secure the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II championship for the first time since 2015. This is program's 22nd title in team history, and third under head coach Jennifer Ei.
Johnson County (20-2/17-2) opened the week with a 3-1 win (31-29, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16) at Allen Community College on Tuesday, March 23rd , and followed with a home-and-home sweep over Coffeyville. JCCC won 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) Wednesday, March 24th at Coffeyville, followed by a 3-1 win (25-17, 25-16, 25-20, 25-9) over the Red Ravens at JCCC Gymnasium Thursday, March 25.
With the three victories, Johnson County extended its current win streak to nine straight matches, while improving to 20-2 overall and 17-2 in conference. They close out the regular season on Monday, March 29 at Cowley College.
In the win at Allen, right-side hitter Mikayla Powell matched her career-high for kills with 20, and outside hitter Brooke Wroten established a new career-high with 18 to power the Lady Cavaliers. Wroten had the best kill percentage on the hitters at .615, followed by Powell at .405
Three players finished double digits in digs for the match. Makenzie Griffel led the way with 23, matching her third-highest total of the season. Maddie Steiner followed with 14 digs, and Alyssa Smith added 13.
Setter Kallie Fenscke had her best match as a college player, establishing a new career high for assists with 40. Her previous career high was 38 against Kirkwood last season.
In the 3-0 win at Coffeyville, Fenscke and Ryleigh McBurney were credited with 20 and 18 assists respectively. Powell had 10 kills, followed by nine from Gracie LaForge, and Smith led the team with 12 digs.
In the home victory over the Red Ravens, Shannon Riley was the star posting a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs.
Griffel also posted double figures for digs with 10, and Fenscke and McBurney contributed 15 and 14 assists respectively.
