JCCC volleyball team headed to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament.  The Lady Cavaliers swept both Coffeyville and Kansas City Kansas to win the NJCAA Region VI/Plains District A Championship, and punch their ticket to Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, site for this year's national tournament. The tournament will take place April 13-15. 

Under the leadership of coach Jennifer Ei, the Lady Cavaliers will make their eighth national tournament appearance in 13 years, and the 17th all-time. With the two victories, Ei now has an all-time record of 19-4 in Region VI/District championship play. Johnson County is currently ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA with an overall record of 23-2. 

Johnson County breezed through their opening match against Coffeyville, winning 25-11, 25-11 and 25-16. The Lady Cavalier really weren't really challenged in the final match with KCKCC, winning 25-20, 25-11 and 25-19. 

Sophomore right-side hitter Mikayla Powell tallied 27 kills in the championship, with an impressive kill percentage of .667. She now has 654 career kills, which ranks her 12th all-time at JCCC. Powell currently ranks second in the conference with a kill percentage of .365. 

Ei also got solid production from several of her other hitters. Sophomore outside hitter Gracie LaForge and freshman outside hitter Sydney Healy finished with 18 kills. They both also registered solid numbers for their kill percentage. LaForge hit at a percentage of .630, and Healy hit .406.  LaForge is the conference leader with a season kill percentage of .371 

Sophomore outside/right-side hitter Shannon Riley had a total of 12 kills with a kill percentage of .440. 

Sophomore setter Kallie Fenscke, last week's KJCCC Setter of the Week, had 26 assists against Coffeyville, and 27 in the title match against Kansas City Kansas. She now has 1,229 career assists, which places her 15th on JCCC all-time chart. 

Sophomore defensive specialist Makenzie Griffel, last week's  KJCCC Defensive Player of the Week, registered 22 digs over the two matches, upping her season total to 443, which ranks third in the conference.  She ranks 15th all-time on JCCC's career chart with 717 over her two seasons. 

Freshman outside/right-side hitter Alyssa Smith reached double figures in digs in both matches, tallying 11 in each.
