No. 1 JCCC volleyball improves to 20-0 with win over Coffeyville

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II, continued to roll through its 2023 schedule improving to 20-0 with a 3-1 win over Coffeyville Wednesday evening at JCCC Gymnasium. 

The Cavaliers won the opening set 25-21, then the Ravens came back to even the match with a 25-23 victory. That was just the fifth losing set for JCCC this year. Johnson County closed out the match winning the final two sets easily, 25-13, 25-15, upping their season mark to a perfect 20-0 and 6-0 in conference play. 

Sophomore outside/right side hitter Sarina Ulberg (Independence, Mo.) and freshman outside hitter Tori Valentine (Blue Springs, Mo.) each recorded double figures in kills.  Ulberg tallied 15 in the match, just one shy off her season high effort. It was her ninth time in double digits.  For Valentine it was the fifth time she posted double figures finishing with 10. 

Othe key efforts form JCCC's hitters were turned by freshman Kennedy Smalley (Harrisonville, Mo.), sophomore Sophia Ewy (Eudora, Kan.) and freshman Chloe Carlgren (Auburn, Kan.) Kennedy posted nine kills and a kill percentage of .375. Ewy tallied seven kills and Carlgren had six kills with a kill percentage of .500. 

Setters Sydney Fiatte (Shawnee, Kan.) and Wren VanCleave (Bonner Springs, Kan.) finished with 26 and 21 assists respectively to lead the Cavaliers attack. Fiatte also had nine digs and VanCleave tallied six digs. 

On the defensive side, freshman libero Lillie Sullivan (De Soto, Kan.) and sophomore libero Emily Silvers tallied double figures in digs. Sullivan established a new season high with 20 with Silvers finishing with 13.

Next up for the Cavaliers is their annual JCCC Classic. They host Avila University JV and University of Saint Mary JV on Friday, September 29, on Ottawa University JV and North Platte Community College on Saturday, September 30.
