JCCC volleyball improves to 25-0 with victory over MidAmerica Nazarene

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II, kept its unbeaten season intact with a 3-1 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene JV Wednesday evening at the JCCC Gymnasium. 

The Cavaliers opened with a pair of 25-10 set wins and closed out the match with a 25-6 victory. The Pioneers took the third season 25-21. 

JCCC's hitters collected 51 kills in the match. Sophomore Sophia Ewy (Eudora, Kan.) and freshman Bella Hedke (Marysville, Kan.) led the way each recording nine kills. Sophomore Isabella Flaska (St. Joseph, Mo.) followed with eight kills and sophomore Sarina Ulberg (Independence, Mo.) and freshman Chloe Carlgren (Auburn, Kan.) added six and five kills respectively.

Sophomore Sydney Fiatte (Shawnee, Kan.) and freshman Wren VanCleave (Bonner Springs, Kan.) contributed to 42 of the team's 44 total assists, with 25 going to Fiatte and 17 to VanCleave. 

On defense, freshman Lillie Sullivan (Shawnee, Kan.) tied her season-best match dig total with 20. It marked the 13th time she finished in double figures. 

The top-ranked Cavaliers will face a much stronger field this weekend competing in the Des Moines Area Tournament. They open the tournament on Friday against No. 12 Illinois Central followed by Bismarck State. On Saturday they take on No. 11 Kirkwood and No. 4 Parkland. They return home to host No. 3 Cowley on Wednesday, October 11 at 6 p.m., in a key conference match.
