Cavaliers take first two games of the season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College baseball team, ranked in the top-25 in five different preseason polls, opened its 2019 season yesterday with a pair of wins at Brookhaven College Farmers Ranch, Texas.  The Cavaliers opened with a 3-1 win, and followed with an 11-1 win in shortened game of four innings 

In the opener, sophomore right-hander Zachary Ebert, who will be the ace of the staff, put on masterful performance. He allowed two hits and one run with five strikeouts in his six innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Cam Wynne pitched the final two thirds to pick up the save. 

The Cavaliers drove in all three runs in the fifth inning. With two runners on, freshman right fielder Derek Albein tripled, driving in Jacob Owns, who walked, and Blake Shannon, who pinch ran for Josh Fiene after he singled. Sophomore second baseman Mason Hartman got Albein home with a sacrifice. 

In the second game, the Cavaliers exploded for 11 run, scoring five in the second and six in the third.  Sophomore center fielder Anthony Amicangelo drove had a triple and drove in two in the second, and plated two more runs in the third. He also scored in both innings. 

Sophomore All-American first baseman Malik Williams drove in three, and freshman outfielder Landon Wood and sophomore designated hitter Evan Bergman each collected two hits. 

Freshman Trey Ziegenbein got the win. He allowed just one single and struck out five in his four innings on the hill. 

These two teams go at it again today with a pair of games beginning at noon. The Cavalier return home to host Ellsworth Friday-Sunday, Feb. 15-17, in a four-game series, weather permitting.
