Rally comes up short in double overtime setback

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 5-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team rallied from an 18-point deficit with 6:50 to play, to tie Fort Scott and send the game into overtime.  However, the Cavaliers eventually lost in the second overtime period, 93-88. 

With loss Johnson County falls to 18-4 on the season and to 1-1 and a six-way tie for first in conference play. 

Sophomore guard JaQuaylon Mays led all scorers with 28 points. He was 10-of-18 from the field, with two 3-pointers, and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.  

Sophomore center Lukas Milner followed with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. He all seven of his field goal attempts, upping his season shooting percentage to 72 percent. 

Mays and Milner both fouled out in the second overtime, and not having them on the floor gave the Greyhounds the advantage they needed to close out the game. 

Other key efforts by Johnson County came from sophomore Nic Slavin (9 points), sophomore Kylan Thomas (9 points, 2 assists), freshman Dale Talley III (9 points, 3 rebounds) and sophomore Isiah Sears (8 points). 

Kannon Jones led Fort Scott with 26 points, followed by Craig Jordan with 18 and Peter Simon with 16. 

The Cavaliers (18-4/1-1) will be back in action on Wednesday, January 29 when they host Labette Community College (13-7/1-1) in a 7:30 p.m., tip. The Cardinals are coming in off a loss as well, falling to Highland 71-66 on Saturday.
