OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County men's basketball coach Mike Jeffers knew they would be short-handed going into their conference road showdown with rival Kansas City Kansas on Wednesday as 6-10 center Lukas Milner was out with the flue. What Jeffers did not anticipate that his leading scorer, JaQuaylon Mays, would not be available after just five minutes of action.

The six-time Kansas Jayhawk Conference D-II Player of the Week suffered an injury to his shooting shoulder and could not return.  Mays had been averaging over 20 points per game in conference play. As a result, he was held to five points, his second lowest output of the season, and the No. 11-ranked Cavaliers were upset by the Blue Devils, 82-65 Wednesday night.

Johnson County led for just one-minute, 28-seconds. The rest was all Kansas City Kansas.

The loss drops Johnson County to 20-5 overall, and tied with Highland for second place in the conference at 3-2. KCKCC improves to 12-12 overall, and stand alone in the conference standings at 4-1.

Sophomore forward Isiah Sears was solid taking over Milner's role in the line-up. He set career highs for points with 19 and made 3-pointers with five to lead the Cavaliers. Sears was 7-for-15 shooting overall, and 5-of-6 beyond the arc.

Sophomore guard Nic Slavin and freshman guard Dale Talley III each contributed 11 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Macaleb Hughes nearly posted a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Kansas City Kansas had five players, including four starters,  finish in double figures.  Jalen Davis led the Blue Devils with 17.  Jermaine Yarbough followed with 16 points off the bench.

Johnson County will host Highland (16-7/3-2) on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Scotties are coming off a 58-43 home win over Fort Scott Wednesday night.
