OVERLNAD PARK, Kan. – After the first three games were postponed to due COVID-19 protocols, the 2020-21 season for the Johnson County Community College men's basketball team finally got started Saturday afternoon inside JCCC Gymnasium. 

The No. 7-ranked Cavaliers got off to hot start and led by double figures with just over four minutes to play in the first half. That is when the momentum changed. John Wood Community College went on a 16-2 run to pull within two points, 35-33, at halftime.  The Trailblazers picked up their defensive intensity in the second half on their way to a 66-58 upset victory over Cavaliers in new head coach Rand Chappell's debut. 

Johnson County's offense produced just 23 second half points, but still had four players finish in double figures. 

Sophomore 6-8 forward Jaland Whitehead registered his fifth career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He was 4-of-10 shooting, 3-of-5 at the free throw line and blocked two shots. 

Freshman forward Xavier Kahube and freshman guard Desi Williams each finished with 12 points. Kahube had a hot hand hitting 5-of-6 shots along with two free throws. Williams knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was a perfect 4-of-4 at the line He also added six boards two assists and two steal 

Freshman forward Jacob Coleman contributed 10 points, two assists and two steals. 

Two other key efforts were turned by sophomore guard Jaycson Bereal and freshman guard Seth Chargois.  Bereal had six points six rebounds. Chargois posted seven points and five boards. 

Jarvis Jennings was top performer for the Trail Blazers, finishing with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers will attempt to bounce back and notch Chappell's first win at JCCC when they host Ottawa University JV on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m.
