OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – On Monday afternoon the Johnson County Community College men's basketball team (10-1, 1-0) learned they had taken over the third spot in the current NJCAA Division Poll, and later that night they increased their winning streak to 10 straight with a 97-85 victory over Southeast Community College.

The Storm came into JCCC Gymnasium riding a win streak of four game, with one of those wins coming against the previous No. 3 team in the country, Highland Community College.

Southeast jumped out early to a 6-0 lead and later led 13-5 with 13:45 to play in the first half. The Cavaliers whittled away at their lead and with a layup by Jaylan Whitehead at the 9:35 mark gave JCCC a lead they would never relinquish.

Whitehead, a sophomore forward from Grand Rapids, Mich., posted his team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds. He was 8-of-10 from the field with one 3-pointer, and 3-of-6 at the free throw line.

While Whitehead's effort was impressive, he wasn't the team's leading scorer. Freshman forward Xavier Kahube had that honor, finishing with 23 points, two shy of his season's best mark. He hit 11-of-15 shots along with one free throw. He also had five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Also posting double digits were sophomore guards Bing Haung and Jaycson Bereal with 15 and 11 respectively.

Freshman guards Jacob Coleman and Desi Williams has posted solid performances. Coleman finished with eight points, six boards and two assists, while Williams tallied seven points and dished out a season-high 10 assists.

Kofi Hamilton led Southeast with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Wardy and Much Biel followed with 20 points each.

Johnson County returns to Jayhawk D-II Conference play Wednesday night when they travel to Fort Scott to take on the Greyhounds (6-2, 1-0).
