Johnson County downs Labette 71-59 to win 13th straight

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After losing the season opener back in January, the Johnson County men's basketball team has reeled off 13 consecutive victories while moving up the national rankings chart. The Cavalier, now ranked No. 2 in NJCAA Division II, stand 13-1 after handing Labette a 71-59 loss Saturday at JCCC Gymnasium.

The 13-game win streak ties the second longest in team history. The 2017-18 Cavaliers also won 13 straight. The longest streak is 16 games set during the 1972-73 season. 

Sophomore guard Jaycson Bereal helped Johnson County build a 10-point lead in first half, scoring 12 of his game-high 21.  He was 5-of-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. He finished 9-of-13 overall and 3-of-6 beyond the arc.  Bereal also pulled down 10 rebounds to post his first double-double of the season. 

Sophomore forward Jaland Whitehead also posted a double-double of  14 points and 12 boards, his ninth of the campaign. 

Sophomore guard Bing Haung also finished in double digits with 10 points. 

Freshman guard Desi Williams and freshman forward Jacob Coleman had solid efforts for the Cavaliers. Williams finished with seven points, six assists and four boards.  Coleman added eight points, four rebounds and two assists. 

Bryson Dennis led the Cardinals with 19 points. 

Johnson County will next be in action on Saturday, March 20, when they welcome Fort Scott to JCCC Gymnasium for a 4 p.m. tip.  They were scheduled to travel to Kansas City Kansas on Wednesday night, but that game has been postponed.   JCCC also had last Wednesday game with Highland postponed.
