
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Three members of the No. 11-ranked and region champion Johnson County men's basketball team were selected as all-conference performers for the 2020-21 season. Sophomore forward Jaland Whitehead and sophomore guard Jaycson Bereal landed on the first-team. Freshman guard Desi Williams earned second-team honors.
Additionally, Whitehead was chosen the league's Defensive Player of the Year, and Williams garnered Freshman the Year. Whitehead is the just the second JCCC player be tabbed the conference's top defensive player, and Williams is the third to be selected the top freshman.
Whitehead is averaging 13.9 points and 11.6 rebounds this season, becoming just the 10th player to all-time at JCCC and first since 2001-02 to average a double-double. He has scored in double figures in 14 games, has 15 games of 10+ rebounds and has 13 double-double performances. He leads the conference in total rebounds with 232 and rebound average, and he ranks fifth and sixth respectively in the NJCAA. He also ranks second in the conference and 10th in the NJCAA with 35 blocked shots. Twice during the season, Whitehead was selected the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, earning the honor in weeks seven and 11.
Bereal ranks second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 13.4 points and 7.0 rebounds. He is shooting 53.9 percent from the floor, third-best on the team and fifth-best in the conference, and he is third in the conference with 32 blocks. Bereal has scored in double figures in 14 games and top 10+ rebounds three time, with two double-doubles. During the season, he was selected the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week three times, earning the honor in weeks six, eight and nine.
Williams ranks third on the squad in scoring at 10.7 points per game. He also averages 3.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and is connecting on 83.7 percent at the free throw line, second-best in the conference and 19th in the NJCAA. He leads the conference in both total assists with 83 and in assists per game. His 83 assists rank 18th in the NJCAA. Williams has reached double figures in points 11 times this season, and one game with 10 assists.
