Three Cavaliers land on KJCCC D-II Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced the results of the 2022-23 Men's Basketball All-Conference Team for Division II and the individual award winners earlier this week.  These awards and teams are voted on by the league's head coaches. 

Three members of the Johnson County Community College men's program earned all-conference recognition. Sophomore guard Tymer Jackson and sophomore forward Ryan Gordon were selected as first-team performers. Sophomore forward Xavier Kahube  was a second-team selection. Additionally, Jackson was voted as the Most Valuable Player, becoming fifth player in team history to be selected MVP. Additionally, head coach Rand Chappell was selected the KJCCC D-II Coach of the Year. 

Coach Chappell along with his three award winners have helped lead Johnson County to a 26-7 record, conference and district championships and a berth to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The Cavaliers were given the No. 13 seed and face No. 4 seed and host Danville Area in the opening round. 

Jackson leads the team and conference in total points with 581 and in scoring average at 20.0. Currently, he is one only 11 players to average 20+ points in a season. Jackson has scored in double figures in 27 games, which ties for 19th on JCCC's season chart, and could end up tied for fourth depending on how deep the Cavaliers make it in the tournament. He has 17 games of 20+ points and one 30-point game. Jackson has been the leading scorer in 21 gamed, which ties for fourth on the season chart. He leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference with 57 3-point baskets. He also leads the conference in 3-point field goal accuracy (42.2%), second in with 118 made free throws and fourth in free throw accuracy (79.7%). During the season, Jackson was selected as the KJCCC D-II Men's Player of the Week three times, earning the honor is weeks four, eight and 10. 

Over his career, Jackson averages 19.2 points and during the 2022-23 season he became just the 14th player in team history to surpass 1,000 points. He currently stands at 1,114 pionts, which ranks sixth all-time. He also ranks eighth in made field goals (393), tied for 13th in made 3-point baskets (113), ninth in made free throws (215), 10th in free throw accuracy (78.5%), sixth in career scoring average, seventh in games with 10+ points (53) and is the all-time leader in games led in scoring (37). Last year, Jackson was a first-team all-conference and all-region pick, the Newcome of the Year recipient in the conference and was named NJCAA D-II third team All-American.

Gordon came to JCCC after playing the previous two years at Shawnee Community College, and he proved to be a valuable addition to the roster. He is averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.0 steals. From the field he is connecting on 54.7 percent of his field goal attempts is make 71.4 percent at the free throw line. Gordon has scored in double figures in 29 games which leads the team and ranks seventh in team history. He also has topped double digits in rebounds three times. He has led the team in scoring eight times, and in rebounds 11 games. Gordon ranks third in the conference in total points (492), fifth in scoring average, sixth in field goal accuracy, third in total rebounds (212), third in rebound average, third in steals average, tied for second in total steals (64) and third in blocked shots (28). 

Kahube is averaging 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He ranks third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. He is connecting on 60.8 percent of field goal attempts which ranks third in the conference. Kahube has scored in double figures 18 times, topped 10+ rebounds five times and has a team leading five double-doubles. He also ranks sixth in the conference in rebound average, ninth in scoring average and 11th in total rebounds (162). 

For his career, Kahube has played in 75 games, the second most by a player in team history. He is averaging 9.9 points, 5.1 rebounds , 1.2 assist and is connecting on 59.1 percent of his field goal attempts, which ranks fifth all-time.
