No. 4 Cavaliers throttle Southeast 96-44

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A day after the NJCAA slotted the Johnson County men's basketball team in the No. 4 spot of the D-II Men's Basketball Poll, the Cavaliers celebrated by handing Southeast Community College its larges loss in the 23-game series history, 96-44. 

Johnson County held a slim one-point lead seven minutes after the opening tip when sophomore forward Kyler Mann started a 24-3 run that put game away. Mann would finish the game with nine points and game high 13 rebounds.

The star for the Cavaliers was redshirt freshman Donald Bangham, Jr. The 6-5 forward from Kansas City, Mo., poured in 29 points, hitting 13-of-17 shots, including two 3-pointers and free throw. It is the second straight game Banham, Jr. has finished with 20+ points. He had 21 in Saturday's 126-62 home win over Ottawa JV. 

Also finishing in double figures was sophomore guard Stavian Jones. The Lawrence native came if off the bench to score a season high 13 points, downing all four of 3-point shots to go along with a free throw.

Starting sophomore guard Jordan Nichols and reserve sophomore guard Elijah Cole both put up solid performances. Nichols posted a line of nine points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds. Cole finished with eight points, six boards, two assists and two blocks. 

As a team, the Cavaliers shot 50.7 percent (38-for-75) and 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the 3-point line.  

Southeast did not have a player finish in double figures and as a team they shot 32.7 percent from the field and 20 percent beyond the 3-point arc.

The Cavaliers travel to Highland, Kan., for the Scottie Classic this weekend. They take on OnPoint Academy on Friday evening followed by Arkansas State Mid-South on Saturday afternoon. JCCC defeated ASU Mid-South last year to place seventh at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.
