JCCC blows first half lead to lose 66-63 at Highland

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County men's basketball team (20-4, 6-2) built a seven-point lead after 20 minutes of play, but failed to keep pace in the latter half, allowing Highland (14-4, 4-4) to complete the comeback, 66-63, and sweep the season series. With the loss, the Cavalier fall back into a tie for first place in the conference race with Kansas City Kansas. 

The Cavaliers defense shut down Highland in the first half, holding the Scotties to just 29 percent shooting. The second half was a complete turnaround. Highland made 53 percent of its shot attempts in the second half compared to 34 percent by the Cavaliers. The Scotties also hit six 3-point baskets while JCCC was 1-for-11, and 4-of-20 for the game. 

Johnson County's starting lineup accounted for 60 of the team's 63 points. They had three players finish in double figures scoring, led by sophomore guard Massi Malterer with 18 points.

Freshman forward Donald Bangham, Jr., followed with 15 points and sophomore forward Kyler Mann posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. 

JCCC's other two starters, sophomore guard Jordan Nichols and freshman forward Brandon Mann finished with eight and six points respectively.

Sophomore forward Chris Flippin lead the Scotties with 18 points followed by freshman guard Bubba Leavell with 14.

Johnson County will to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when they host Kansas City Kansas (15-9, 6-2). The winner will take over sole possession of first place in the conference.
