OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 15-ranked Johnson County Community College men's basketball program picked up its 1,000th all-time victory Friday night, as the Cavaliers played well down the stretch to register a 78-66 victory over Iowa lakes Community College at JCCC Gymnasium.
Clinging to a one 54-53 lead with just over seven minutes to play, Johnson County went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes that propelled them to the 12-point victory.
Both teams were fairly even statistically with the exception at the free throw line. The Cavaliers made 18 of their 19 free throw attempts, while the Lakers were just 7-of-12.
All five Cavalier starters finished in double figures led freshman guard Gavin Harvey with 21 points. He was 7-for-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and 5-of-6 at the line. He also had five assists.
Freshman guard Joey Robinson, freshman forward Tavian Cruse and sophomore forward Brandon Mann each followed with 14 points. Robinson was 6-of-12 shooting with a trey and a free throw to go along with five assist and three rebounds. Cruse hits 6-of-10 shots with two 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds and Mann was 3-of-6 with a trey and a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. He also led the team with nine boards.
The final starter in double figures was sophomore guard Steven Samuels with 10 points. He hit a two-point bucket and a 3-pointer and was 5-for-5 at the line. He also led the team with two steals.
Johnson County (2-1) will return to the floor Saturday evening to host Southwestern Community College (1-1) at 6 p.m. The Spartans are coming off an 87-54 loss to Highland Community College earlier in the day.
