Cavaliers pull away late for victory over Rock Valley

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 13-ranked Johnson County Community College men's basketball team continued its strong start to the season by fighting past a pesky Rock Valley College on Saturday afternoon, earning a 67-61 victory over the Golden Eagles at JCCC Gymnasium. 

With the victory, the Cavaliers move to 6-1 and extend their winning streak to five straight. 

The first half saw 11 lead changes with JCCC taking its largest lead of four points into the locker room at halftime. 

With the game tied at 36-36 early in the second half, Johnson County went on a 14-2 run to build a 12-point lead at 50-38 with just over 10 minutes to play. But Rock Valley battled back to tie the game at 50-50 with 12-0 run over the next three minutes.

Then JCCC freshman guard Garvin Harvey took over, scoring 10 of the Cavaliers next 14 points to help JCCC take control of the game and finish off the Golden Eagles

Harvey tie for the team high in points with 15 on 5-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. He also dished out five assists. 

Freshman forward Tavian Cruse also poured in 15 points hitting 6-of-13 shots and three free throws. He also grabbed a game high 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in seven games. 

Sophomore forward Brandon Mann also posted double figures with 10 points and freshman guard Joey Robinson added six points seven rebounds and two assists. 

Sophomore forward Traeger Rader was JCCC top player off the bench finishing with eight points and four boards. 

Jamarion Readus led Rock Valley with 17 points, followed by Adrian Agee with 14.

The Cavaliers have several days off before hosting Sterling College JV on Friday, November 22 at 6 p.m.
