Orville Gregory

JCCC’s first athletic director and head men’s basketball coach, Orville Gregory helped build a solid program.  In just his second season, Gregory led Kansans to a winning mark of 17-12, a year later to 23 wins and a conference title.  His final campaign, Gregory guided his team to a 25-5 mark and a runner-up finish in the conference.  Gregory also coached two NJCAA All-Americans, two All-Region VI selections and five all-conference performers.  A few years after stepping away from coaching, Gregory helped found the NJCAA Women’s National Basketball Tournament, and he hosted the first eight championships in history.  In 1992, Gregory became the first inductee to the JCCC Athletics Hall of Fame.  In 2001, he earned induction to the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jeff Simons

Jeff Simsons took over the JCCC men’s basketball program in 1973, and led the Kansans to three straight 20-win seasons, including a school record 28 wins his first two years.  His first campaign, Simons guided JCCC to a 28-3 mark, and a conference championship.  His .903 winning percentage that season is still a school record.  In his third campaign, Simons led JCCC to its first Region VI title and appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.  In his five years at JCCC, Simons posted a 104-50 mark and a .675 winning percentage, best among all JCCC men’s basketball coaches.  He also coached the program’s top two All-time leading scorers in Herb Nobles and Carl Smith.  Nobles was the conference scoring champion in both 1973-74 and 1974-75.  Simons coached two All-Region VI performers, two Kansas Jayhawk Conference selections and 11 of his players earned Greater Kansas City Community College Conference accolades.

Don Wilhelm

Don Whilhem became the third coach in the program’s history, taking over in 1978.  Wilhelm served four seasons at JCCC, producing a 51-72 record. He is the only coach to not have a winning mark at the end of his tenure. Wilhelm’s best season was his last in 1981-82.  He led JCCC to a 16-15 record and runner-up finish in the conference.  Wilhelm coached five All-Region VI performers and eight all-conference selections. 

Lafayette Norwood

Lafayette Norwood became the fourth head coach in school history in 1982.  He joined the program after serving as an assistant coach under Ted Owens at Kansas.  Norwood served as JCCC’s men’s basketball head coach for nine seasons (1982-91), compiling a 146-136 career record, which made him the winningest coach at the time. During his nine seasons, he coached one NJCAA All-American, four All-Region VI performers and 18 East Jayhawk All-Conference performers.  He also had one player, Tony Harris, play in the NBA.  Norwood had five winnings season, and topped the 20-win mark twice, including a 24-9 season in 1987-88.  That year, Harris set a single-season scoring mark at JCCC and ranked among the nation’s top scorers.

Zac Roman

Zac Roman began the 2006-07 season serving as Mike Jeffers top assistant, but his role changed January 17, 2007, when he took over the program as interim head coach after Jeffers was granted a medical leave of absence.  JCCC stood 5-10 at the time. Roman then guided the Cavaliers to an 11-9 record, a Region VI Championship, a District 10 Championship and a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, the second D-II appearance for the program, the third national tournament appearance overall.  In addition, Roman earned NJCAA District 10 Coach of the Year honors.  Additionally, he coached one All-American, three All-Region selections and two all-conference performers.

Ryan Morley

Ryan Morley began the 2014-15 season serving as Mike Jeffers top assistant, but his role changed after two games into the campaign, when he took over the program as interim head coach after Jeffers was granted a medical leave of absence.  JCCC stood 1-1 at the time. Morley guided JCCC to a 14-16 record the rest of the way, and helped the Cavaliers reached the Region VI Tournament semifinals. 

Mike Jeffers

Mike Jeffers coached 33 seasons at JCCC and compiled a record of 499-390. Along the way he led the Cavaliers to two national championships, one national runner-up finish, five NJCAA Tournament appearances, nine Region VI titles and three confernce titles. He twice named NJCAA and KABC Coach of the Year, was the NABC Coach of the Year in 2009 and in 2020 was elected to the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Individually he coached 16 NJCAA All-American, two NJCAA Player of the year recipients, one NABC Player of the Year, 60 all-conference performers, 60 All-Region VI performers, 10 national all-tournament perofrmers, two natoinal tournament MVPs, four conference MVPs, two freshmen of the year and one defensive player of the year. Jeffers is also a member of the JCCC Athletics Hall of Fame.
