JCCC men’s soccer suffers overtime loss in Plains District final

WICHITA, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men's soccer team suffered a tough overtime loss to Cowley College Saturday night in the 2022 NJCAA Plains District Championship Final played at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kan. 

The match remained scoreless until the 65th minute when Cowley forward Yuki Sekiguchi scored an unassisted goal. 

The Cavaliers tied the match a 1-1 in the 80th minute when sophomore forward Ashton Owen fired a shot in the back of the net on a loose ball off a corner. 

It remained tied the rest regulation and for 8-mintues and 42-seconds in overtime when the Tigers forward Mate Kenyeres netted an unassisted the game winner, sending Cowley to the NJCAA Men's Division National Tournament.

Cowley outshot the Cavaliers 28-to-6, and 12-to-3 on shots on goal. 

JCCC goalkeeper Cole Stewart saved 10 shots in the loss. The Tigers Rafael Furlani had two saves.

The Cavaliers stand 14-7-0, and despite the loss, still have hopes of the season moving forward if they should receive an at-large bid to compete in the national tournament.
