JCCC sweeps week 5 conference baseball awards

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The week five awards for the Kansas Jayhawk Conference baseball player and pitcher of the week were announced Tuesday, and Johnson County Community College took both honors. For the third consecutive week sophomore infielder Brady Slavens was named the Player of the Week, and for the first time this season, freshman right-handed pitcher Drew Garrett was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.

Slavens batted .636 (7-for-11) with two doubles, four home runs, seven runs scored and 15 driven in over in four victories last week for the No. 12-ranked Cavaliers.  He has hit a home run in five straight games.  For the season, Slavens is batting .516 and leads the conference and NJCAA with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.

Garrett did not allow a hit or a run in six innings on the bump and struck out 15 batters in a 10-0 shutout over Labette. His 15 strikeouts tie the third-best game in program history. For the season, Garrett is 4-0 with 50 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.00. He has only allowed one hit all season and his hitless innings streak has now reached 18.1.
