Baseball announces its 2019-20 team awards

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College baseball team and NJCAA and ABCA hall of fame coach Kent Shelley announced its team MVP, Cavalier and Academic award winners for the 2019-20 season today. 

Sophomore infielder Brady Slavens (Olathe Northwest HS / Olathe, Kan. was selected the team's most valuable player. The Cavalier award was given to sophomore outfielder Landen Wood (Union HS / Tulsa, Okla.) and the top academic performer was sophomore infielder Garrett Wood (Claremore HS / Claremore, Okla.) These three were part of a squad that posted a 20-3 record, a No.9 national ranking and stood in first place in the East Jayhawk Conference in 2019-20 when the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In his first season at Johnson County, Slavens was on pace for a historic season. He was batting .507 (38-for-75) and led the NJCAA with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs before the season was cut short. He also produced nine doubles, two triples scored 25 runs, 13 multiple-hit games and 12 multiple-RBI games. Twenty five of his 38 hits (66%) went for extra bases and he had more homers than singles (13). Slaven led the conference in hits home runs and RBIs and ranked third in doubles. He was chosen the KJCCC Player of the Week in three consecutive weeks, earning the honor in weeks 3, 4 and 5. Slavens, whose father Ryan played baseball at JCCC, signed to play at the University of Arkansas next season. 

Landen Wood batted .397 (29-for-73) with a double, two triples, a home run, 32 runs scored and 11 driven in 2020. He also stole 17 bases, which led the team and ranked second in the conference. His 32 runs scored tied for the team lead and for second in the conference. He produced 10 multiple-hit, three multiple-RBI and four multiple-steal games. As a freshman, Wood earned All-East Jayhawk Conference second-team honors after batting .368 (75-for-204) with 15 doubles, five triples, three homers, 32 RBIs and new season record of 81 runs scored. He also led the conference and ranked fifth nationally with 50 stolen bases. For his career, Wood batted .375 (104-for-277) with 16 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 113 runs scored and 43 RBIs. He produced 32 multi-hit, 11 multi-RBI and 19 multi-steal games. He finished his career with 67 stolen baes, fifth-most at Johnson County and has 113 runs scored are ninth-most all-time. He earned JCCC student-athlete academic honors in the fall 2019 semester with a 4.0 grade point average. 

Garrett Wood batted .339 (20-for-59) with five doubles, 22 runs scored and 10 driven in 2020. He also drew 10 walks,  had three multiple-hit games and two multiple-RBI games. As a freshman he served a one of the team captains. He batted .322 (37-for-115) with seven doubles, three triples a home run, 44 runs and 26 driven in. He registered seven multi-hit and six multi-RBI games. For his career, Wood batted .328 (57-for-274) with 12 doubles, three triples, a homer, 66 runs and 36 RBIs. He earned JCCC student-athlete academic honors in the fall 2019 semester with a 4.0 grade point average, and earned second-team NJCAA All-Academic honors as in 2019 with a 3.88 GPA.
