Seven JCCC men’s soccer players earn All-KJCCC D-II honors

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) announced its 2024 men's soccer awards and Johnson County had seven players named to the All-KJCCC Division II Men's Soccer Team. Two were on the first-team and five earned second-team recognition. 

Earning first team were sophomore midfielder Monty Almaliky and sophomore midfielder Dominic Zuniga.  Second-team honors went to sophomore defender Nick McTighe, sophomore forward Ryan Grinstead, freshman forward Tanner Poirier, sophomore midfielder Caleb Brueckner and freshman goalkeeper Ben Hertel.  Almaliky, Zuniga and McTighe were also all-conference selections last year. 

Almaliky and Zuniga tied as the team's leading scorers in 2024, each with 21 points. Both are tied for fifth in the conference in season points. 

 Almaliky netted seven goals, with one game winner, and seven assists. He also made the only penalty kick attempted on the season.  As a freshman, he also finished with 21 points. He closes out his career with 42 points, 18 goals, 16 assists and four game winning goals. 

Zuniga's 21 points came from eight goals, which tied for the team lead, and five assists. He too had one game winning goal. He also had one multiple goal and one multiple assist game. For his career he finished with 14 goals, five assists for 34 points. 

McTighe was a key member of JCCC's defensive unit which posted a goals against average of 1.44 with four shutouts. He also helped on the offensive end with two goals and four assists for eight points. In a 5-1 win at Hesston, McTighe was credited with two assists in the game. His first assist led to the game winning goal. 

Grinstead returned to the area this fall after playing his freshman year at IUPUI and proved to be a key addition to the roster. He tied for first in scoring with 21 points, and led the team lead in goals scored with nine, including two game winners, both in matches against Central Community College. He also had three assists. His nine goals tied for fourth in the conference. 

Poirier also tallied eight goals scored to tie for the team lead and added two assists for 18 points. Three of his eight goals proved to game winners, which tied for the team high and tied for second in the conference. Poirier had two multiple goal games, most recently in 2-0 at Southeast in final regular season game. 

Brueckner got his sophomore season off to a hot start netting two goals in a 4-0 win over Cape Fear in the season opener. Three games later he picked up his second multiple goal game that included the game winner, in a 10-1 win over State Fair.  He finished the season tied for third in total points with 19 from seven goals scored and five assists.

Hertel finished first collegiate season with a record of 7-3-0 with one shutout, with 54 saves, a save percentage of .750 and a goals against average of 1.80. He tied for second in the conference in wins, was fourth in saves and save percentage, and third in goals against average. During the season, Hertel was selected the KJCCC D-II Goalkeeper of the Week twice, earning the honor in weeks one and five.
